A greatly abridged version of the movie. But the words were simple and large. My daughter got her fill & has begged for me to read it over and over.

The pics are nice but the story is not very good! My daughter only wanted to read it once, sad!

I purchased several of these Step into Reading books for a granddaughter. She is not much for reading yet and I am trying to give her materials to encourage a love of reading. She has really enjoyed all of the Step into Reading books I have sent her so far.

I'm always reluctant to buy books about licensed characters for my school library, but since all of the Barbie and Dora books I inherited from a previous librarian had to be discarded this year due to heavy use, and a couple of our kindergarteners were in tears about the situation, I broke down and ordered a few. Never again!

The plot is vapid and also a bit scary/weird for the target age group. Barbie's character starts out as a bimbo who smashes her mother's necklace. She gets a fake tail and then a real one. She and her evil (no backstory) aunt take turns being cast into a whirlpool.

The lazy blurb writer (for Random House, a formerly trustworthy name in publishing) slapped this on the back cover: "Marisa is a mermaid princess. Can she save the ocean from her evil sister?" Wrong name, wrong family relationship. What a poor example for students of not making a good effort in one's work.

The illustrations were beautiful, so two stars for those and kudos to the Ulkutay Design Group.
