Product Description

Join Barbie and Ken as they beam aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the classic Star Trek Series! Ready for any mission, Barbie is outfitted with an authentic Star Trek uniform. Her badge and red uniform denote her status as a member of the ship's engineering section. She carries a replica of a tricorder, the multipurpose scientific and technical instrument that incorporates computers, sensors and records in a convenient handheld device. She also carries a replica of a communicator allowing he to contact other Starfleet personnel. Ken wears a gold jersey and badge indicating his position in the Command division. He carries a replica of a phaser - an acronym for PHASed Energy Rectification - which is a directed energy weapon used by Starfleet personnel. Lieutenant Barbie and Commander ken join the internationally renowned original crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise: Captain James T. Kirk, First Officer Spock, Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy, Chief Engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, Helmsman Hikaru Sulu, Communications Officer Uhura and Navigator Pavel Chekov on a special voyage. In the 30 years since it first aired, Star Trek has inspired generations of fans with Gene Roddenberry's belief that people of various races, genders and planetary origins can work together to build a constructive future for all mankind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collector's item for the Trekkie, January 4, 2011

This review is from: Barbie & Ken Star Trek Giftset (30th Anniversary Collector Edition) [1996] (Toy)
Originally manufactured in 1996, this Barbie and Ken collectors gift set is meant for the Barbie collector or the serious Star Trek fan, and not as a child's toy. It's really a fun set for a Trekkie: it has Barbie-sized cardboard cut-outs of Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock on the box. I, for one, am keeping mind in the box because of the cool display.

The Barbie is a blonde 1990s superstar sculpt with blue eyes and bangs, her hair in a ponytail with a braid around the base. She's wearing Lt. Uhura's red engineering uniform and carrying a Tricorder over her shoulder. Ken is dressed in the gold command uniform, and he is carrying a phaser for protection, and both dolls are carrying communicators.

Both dolls' uniforms have the Star Trek logo on the front of the shirt, and both have rank insignia at the wrists. The set is from Barbie's 30th anniversary collection.

FInally, keep in mind that when you purchase Barbie collector items from Amazon, or any secondary market, you'll be purchasing items labeled as "new" or NRFB, but they may not actually be that way. They may be from smoking homes, homes with pets, homes from people who aren't actually doll collectors, who don't realize that crushed corners or opened boxes actually does decrease the value of the doll or gift set. The one I received as a gift has crushed corners, and looks like it's been opened--the seal on the bottom of the box has been removed.

I would buy from this seller again. The price was reasonable, delivery was prompt, and the packaging was in excellent condition. The dolls themselves are in near mint condition; they had their original fastenings to the cardboard background still in place, so it must be just the outer box that was repackaged. Barbie and Ken are in perfect shape, except that my Ken has a stain on his torso from his black pants. They also have a faint but not altogether unpleasant odor, which I strongly suspect is from the type of plastic used for their molded heads.

Barbie and Ken each have a communicator, which is a tiny, cellphone-like thing that actually flips open, and is unsuitable for small children. The dolls have holes in their hands by which they are meant to hold the communicators, but they don't work and they keep dropping the pesky things! But since I won't be displaying them, that doesn't matter. If you do wish to display the dolls, each has a black plastic stand with name tag, and there is a Gold Label certificate of authenticity included. Barbie has a tricorder, which also opens. Ken sports a phaser, which he can sheath in a holster loop on the side of his shirt.

Their clothes, made of a sort of felt, are detailed and appropriate. Barbie has red underwear(!) and black stockings. Ken's pants seemed too short, but as I discovered in my Star Trek Encyclopedia, they are exactly the right length for his duty uniform. I was especially excited about their rubber boots, as I have never seen anything like them.

As an amateur collector, I very much enjoy these unique additions to my collection. I would not buy them for a child younger than five years old, however.
