More About the Author

I love writing about truly gifted people and I love the fact that my books have so many great photos. I've worked with some amazing photo researchers & editors because photos are just as important as writing fresh, exciting text that can hold up over the years. We're all online so a book has to be just that much better. I like writing books that people enjoy reading & looking at.

I love tweeting about books, ebooks and the future of publishing.

Having been a Streisand fan since 1974 it was a most unhappy experience when I received this book from Amazon to find the writer didn't do her research. For example: Barbra did not receive an Oscar nomination for the movie "Nuts as stated, although I wish she had. And Billy Crystal homage to Streisand at The Academy Awards in 1992 was to "Prince of Tides' not Yentl. I would expect any Streisand Fan to know this. The photos are beautiful but any Streisand Fan that doesn't check her facts is just a lazy amateur!

BTW, since writing this review I've returned the book to Amazon. I just couldn't have a Streisand book in my home with inaccurate information.

I was warned that the information in the book would be inaccurate. And, so it is. What's alarming is that the information can be verified by anyone with an internet connection. I could go on with what the incorrect information was, but it would take too long. There's one quote printed that I had to read three times to be sure I was reading it right. On Page Eight, "I don't care what you say about me. Just be sure to spell my name wrong."

I had heard to stay clear from this book from certain Streisand "experts". That all the info is not correct, dates wrong, songs incorrect from certain LPs.

But I have to say I was pleasantly surprised when I received this book today. The book is quite beautiful. The photos , most I have seen, are bigger than I have in other books. Nice coverage of her Columbia Catalog.

I have every Streisand book that has been released. I have read them all and I bought this book for the photos. If your a fan you probably have already read or know all about Barbra. So buy this book and look at it while reading another Streisand book. For the price you can't go wrong.

The ONLY book to really read to get all the facts will be Barbra's autobiography when she writes it. So if your a fan you will enjoy this book just for the photos and the over-all look of the book.

Sometimes I think certain fans tell others not to purchase certain items so they are the only ones who have a copy in their collection.

Great addition to your Streisand collection if your like me...someone who has to have everything on "The Greatest Star"!

"A work in progress" is how Ms. Streisand describes herself near the end of Allegra Rossi's beautiful, oversized book BARBRA A RETROSPECTIVE.

For nearly 288 pages, you will see the history of Streisand - both the woman and the legend - portrayed in a variety of pictures and short essays.

In what had to be a monumental feat, Ms. Rossi is clearly one of Barbra's fans - no one could have lovingly compiled such a valentine as a chore or an assignment. The book is chock filled with photos from all her movies, concerts and television appearances. Also, Ms. Rossi has included movie posters for all of Barbra Streisand's films and a pictorial essay of all the album covers - both front and back.

True the pictures are ones that any hard boiled Streisand fan (and I sure am one) has already seen but never before have they been collected in one volume.

In all this is a handsome book and a fine tribute to the talent of the greatest start of our time.

Love the pictures, the concept, and the presentation...but did anyone fact check this book before going to press...it is full of inaccuracies, glaring mistakes & falsehoods. I am surprised that a book so dedicated to one of the greatest artist that ever lived would be published with some many glaring mistakes. Fact check first then print!!!

Can't judge a graphically gorgeous book by its layout. A beautiful-looking visual tribute to its subject--sunk by such shoddy research and haphazard (if any) fact-checking it almost seems like a coffee table version of one of those cheapie celebrity bios you used to see in grocery store paperback racks.

For a purported life-long fan (and some of the material suggests she actually might have been. . .once), author Allegra Rossi sure doesn't appear to have much of a long term memory. So much misinformation and nearly comical contradictory reportage, *almost* worth a look to Streisand fans as a spot-the-errors test.

Several pages after reporting that Nuts was completely ignored at Oscar time, author does complete 180, claiming Barbra was Academy Award-nominated for same film (she was wasn't), but lost to Sally Kirkland (who actually lost to Cher); says Paramount (not Fox) produced Hello Dolly!; announces that Lauren Bacall won Oscar for The Mirror Has Two Faces (she didn't); erroneously credits Phyllis Diller as one of Streisand's co-stars in Off-Off Broadway play Driftwood (Joan Rivers, yes; Phyllis Diller, no); misidentifies movie title of 1952 Susan Hayward movie that pre-dated stage musical I Can Get It For You Wholesale (it was originally released under same exact title). . .well, you get the idea. Oy vey!

The book has a lot of beautiful pictures, but Ms. Rossi, the author, did a very poor work on doing her homework and review her notes for accuracy, there are several mistakes throughout the book, I have counted more than 15 so far, regarding historic facts, the recordings included in each album, photographs with the wrong captions or belonged to a different work, wrong dates for released materials, mistakes like she stated (on page 223) that Lauren Bacall won the Oscar for "The Mirror Has Two Faces" while she was nominated, but never won, etc. It's a shame because the idea was good, the design of the book is awesome, but the author writing is misguided, poorly documented and filled with a lot of misinformation. A visit to Barbra's official site, some good fans' sites, her albums booklets, even wikipedia, would have been helpful, but apparently Ms Rossi was in a hurry to release the book, and didn't had time and respect for accuracy.
