Since this Christmas album has been Re-issued already twice, the first go-round in the 80's, and then in the early to mid 90's when all the early Barbra Streisand catalogue was remastered and re-issued, and the sound there was really quite good, I wondered what they could do to it further. Nowhere on it or on any stickers does it credit any re-mastering, but having read here that it was worked on, I bought it, and then did an A/B comparison on my state of the art headphones with the 90's re-master. And I guess it's the difference between 20 and 24-bit sound. This new one really is amazing in ways; the biggest difference was the sensation of an almost surround-sound like quality of the orchestra and instrumental soloists, and chorus all around you, and Barbra right in the middle, clearly etched out and singing directly to you. As opposed to the older ones, where it was more, voice out front and orchestra somewhere in the rear. Further tweeking seemed to bring out a sudden harp passage, or a violin section or piano underscoring for a few bars leading into a larger section I'd never heard before. So if this makes you listen to something old in a new way again, that's a good thing. It's probably my favorite Christmas recording. If they put it out in 3-D, I'd probably buy it again. But when I played it through my speaker system, it was as pretty close to an aural 3-D as you can get.

It would seem to me there would be 2 reasons to buy this: you never bought it before, or, like me, you like the latest in recorded sound developement and you upgrade on a favorite recording, and find out how much music was there you never heard before. I know Barbra purists like their Barbra undeluted, so the new cover (which is just a scaled down version with a matting) won't be happy, but then one usually buys music for the music. And now this 1967 Lp has really traveled into the digital wizardry of 2004, "and Christmas comes once more".

Barbra was pregnant when this album was recorded, and it gave her voice a slightly reedy feel; just a little different, but oh so wonderful. She stirs you to new heights with her soaring voice on The Lord's Prayer, and her rendition of Silent Night is incomparable. What an original rendition of "My Favorite things"; simply sublime, simply Barbra. What a gift God us with Barbra!! Enjoy!!

In my opinion, as far as Christmas Albums go, this album is only second to Johnny Mathis' Merry Christmas Album.

This album is an example of classic Streisand, the Streisand who held nothing back and gave you every inch of her soul whenever she opened her mouth to sing.

She starts the album with a fun version of Jingle Bells which shows off her vocal prowess and sense of humor to boot.

Barbra then moves into more traditional renditions of classics such as Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, The Christmas Song, O Little Town of Bethlehem.

It is with the unexpected where Barbra bowls the listener over. The Best Gift, is a touching song for which you do not know the subject matter until the very end of the song.

Barbra turns in a great performance of Gonoud's Ave Maria,a version usually not sung on traditional Christmas Albums. She would later record the Schubert verison over 30 years later on her Christmas Memories album. The Gonoud version is the better of the two in my opinion.

Never one to disappoint, Barbra closes the album with probably the best track on the album, her version of The Lord's Prayer. Barbra starts out soft and reserved on this song and then brings it up to full volume at the end and sends chills up your spine.

This is a great album to add to your Christmas collection. I would also suggest Ella Fitzgerald's recently remastered Christmas Album as well!

For the most part, this album features classic songs, sung in the traditional manner by Barbra. Barbra really didn't need to do any more, given her wonderful voice, but she does have a few surprises in store. The opening Jingle bells is not done in the traditional way as Barbra gallops through most of it at breakneck speed. I appreciate Barbra's attempt to do something different but I prefer the standard arrangement. After that brisk opening, the album slows down and never again rises above mid-tempo as the remainder of the album is dominated by ballads.

Barbra may have been the first singer to include My favorite things (the Julie Andrews classic from the Sound of music) in a Christmas album. Nobody is surprised any more that this song sometimes gets included in Christmas albums. The only original song is The best gift (about a baby). Barbra sings it beautifully.

Of Barbra's two Christmas albums, I prefer the other one to this, mainly because the songs are more interesting to me, but I know that a lot of Barbra's fans prefer this one, which was recorded when her voice was at its finest - however, Barbra was still in good voice on the other album.

If you love Barbra's music and you enjoy Christmas music, you will want both of her Christmas albums, but if you only want to buy one of them, you have a hard choice to make.

I have had this album in my collection since it was released on an LP and have also owned it in a CD format. I always look so forward to the Christmas season when my favorite song will receive airplay...."The Gift". I have always loved Barbra and the way she performs a song...though I think this is one of her best. She conveys so beautifully as she sings this song the feelings that a new mother feels and seldom can express so eloquently about her newborn child. I am passing it on today as a gift to a new mother to be.
