Outside the New Testament, there is little one can read with concern to the life and times of the man known as Jesus of Nazareth. After consuming the New Testament more than once, there are some who would dare to learn more about the simple loving man who lost his life on the cross a somewhat unspectacular event for the times yet one that has left its mark on human civilization for all time. None of the other thousands of crucifixions performed by the Roman Empire is remembered like the one that took place in Jerusalem more than two thousand years ago.

My good friend Mark Edwards gave me a complete set of William Barkley comentaries as a gift during a time that I was consuming theological literature and wondering what to make with all the differences in the faith. After a while, every commentary felt the same and seemed not to satisfy until I picked up one of the William Barkley editions that I had been given. William Barkley's research and approach to biblical commentary is to give the reader information about the historical context of what was happening at the time. He explains the historical context of events, customs, and culture in rich detail painting a vivid picture of all that was happening during the time of the written scripture. There are many who do not like William Barkley's theology, but that is not as much as a concern to me as the historical information found in his work. Overall, I feel the writing is excellent and written with the interest that transmits a genuine authenticity of personal faith. The William Barkley New testament collection is truly a hidden gem -JC Angelcraft.
