Book Description

May 1998
The bards of the ancient Celtic world were seers, visionaries, and shamans, wise to the power of words, perceptive about other-worldly phenomena, and capable of opening doors to spiritual realms. Celebrate their legacy and bring together their most inspirational teachings with this outstanding collection. The poems, stories, and speeches explored here come from throughout Britain: some, as in Merlin and Merlinian Poems, focus on familiar and much loved material. Others, equally magical, tell of kings and heroes, wild adventures, witty satirists, and powerful enchanters. These expert discussions reveal all the wonder and brilliance of the bards' precious legacy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have text, April 5, 2000
This review is from: The Bardic Source Book: Inspirational Legacy and Teachings of the Ancient Celts (Hardcover)
This text (as one of three source books written by John Matthews) is an absolute must-have for anyone interested in Celtic history and religion. So many current books have absolutely no historical basis and focus solely for a New Age or occult audience that has no wish to understand historical context or who the bards and druids really were in their own society. This book is actually more of an anthology on the subject of Celtic bards, but the extensive commentary is also very useful. Robin Williamson (of the Incredible String Band) writes a brilliant introduction as well. I can't wait to get the Druids' Source Book and the Celtic Seers' Source Book too -- I enjoyed this text as both a student of Celtic history and as someone interested in modern Celtic spirituality.
