4.0 out of 5 stars Manufactured? YES... but Good Pop Album? YES!, June 18, 2000
By
Rachel M Harrison (Melbourne, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bardot (Audio CD)
They are possibly the most manufactured "girl-band" in the universe, but that has not prevented Tiffany, Sally, Sophie, Belinda and Katie from recording a great pop album. These five girls from all over Australia came together when a television series titled 'Popstars' called for young girls to audition for a girl band. The series ran for a few months and saw the making of the group from the beginning of the auditions to the release of their debut single. 'Poison' was the name of their debut single, and this un-surprisingly debuted at number one on the Australian singles charts. A week later their self-titled debut album also debuted at the top of the albums charts, now making Bardot the only Australian band to have both their debut single and album debut at number one on the A.R.I.A. charts. 1. These Days - My personal favorite track on this album. This is a mid-up beat song, with a very catchy chorus. 5/5 2. I Should've Never Let You Go - This is the second single released from this album. The lead vocals are provided by Katie on this track, whom personally I don't like. Her voice sounds hollow, and the live version is really weak. However, this is a great mid- tempo song and again a really good chorus. 4.5/5 3. Higher Than Heaven - Currently being used in the Olympic Games commercials this song is an average pop song. The lead singer on this track has a great voice. 4/5 4. Poison - This is the debut single from this band. It is quite flat and boring, but with all the publicity, it didn't prevent it reaching number one. 2/5 5. Missin' Your Love - Again, the lead vocals are provided by Katie who has the most distinguishable voice however on this slower ballad it does work well. This is quite a nice song. 3.5/5

6. Down - The beginning of this up-beat song sounds a bit "Spice Girls'ish". At first listen, this song may not be very appealing, but it does grow on you. 3/5 7. Other Side Of Love - A mid-tempo song that takes a little while to get into it, however the chorus is again quite catchy and sing-a- long. 3.5/5 8. What Have You Done - The beginning sounds like an Ally McBeal track. This is a great song, it's fairly up-beat and has a different sound to it. 4.5/5 9. Love Me No More - The slowest track on this album and a bit tiresome. Has nothing special about it. 2.5/5 10. Girls Do, Boys Don't - A young song and up- beat. Not a bad song, but a bit repetitive. 3/5 11. Holding On - Another of my favorite songs, it has a 60's 'Supremes' feel to it. It's up- beat with a great chorus. 4.5/5 12. Got Me Where You Want Me - Has a Spanish flavor to it, and a small section of sounds like 'Spice Up Your Life'. Although I dislike Spanish-pop music, this is quite a good catchy song. 4/5 Many people have been quite cynical about this band, and how they were created, and I must admit I was one of them. I only watched the last few episodes of 'Popstars', and hearing 'Poison' I thought my initial opinion that they are a 'flash in the pan' was correct. It wasn't until the second single 'I Shouldn't Never Let You Go' was released and hearing a couple of other tracks live, that I realised I was wrong. Each of the five girls had all been in the music business prior to Bardot, and the fact they were the five chosen ones out of thousands who auditioned this should give some indication that they do actually have some degree of talent. The girls may not have written the music, but they have certainly performed it and made the songs what they are, which is surprisingly of high quality considering the short amount of time they had to be 'thrown' together and record album. I recommend this album to anyone who enjoys listening to pop music, and don't let their creation put you off, it is fantastic
