4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job, Anywhere with the standard 18V DeWalt Battery
I have had the corded DeWalt Cutout Tool (DW660) for over a year and found it a good tool but the cord was a pain to deal with as I use the other fine DeWalt cordless 18V tools and shun cords like they were snakes.

The new cordless one works great. A must have if you do much cutout work. Sure, you can cutout a hole with a sheetrock saw but why bother if you...

clearly says in product description, that you are getting the tool and a case, but no battery or charger. I ordered this tool because of the included case. Guess what? no case!!! I need the tool or i would send it back, very deceptive advertising!!

Sure, you can cutout a hole with a sheetrock saw but why bother if you have the 18V system already the cutout tool is quite reasonable and you have the power source already!

I was disappointed that the side handle from the old DW660 does not fit the DC550 tool also, I never doubted it would so did not check this out first. If one is available, I have not seen it on a quick search. The side handle has an adjustable pivot point that gives you perfect circles every time, I will miss this convince as free-hand my circles look more like the outline of some fruit in a Picasso painting.

Bottom line it is so much easier to work without dragging the cord around and I have found great use for it using rotary rasps to persuade that stubborn lockset to fit by knocking off the high point without getting any tear-outs like I get with a round rasp.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because my old side handle does not work on it and this meens I have to hang on to the old doofus with the cord for the occation I want a real nice round hole that is not hidden.

Add the DC550 to your DeWalt 18V toolkit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tool, March 11, 2007
Being a carpenter for 25 years and haven hung lots of drywall I was skeptical about this tool. But I wanted to get rid of yet another cord to trip over. For cutting drywall ( which is its primary use) it is awesome. Tons of power and the battery lasts for about 6 hours of drywall installation. If you are a sheetrocker or an avid DIYer I say get this tool.

I am using this tool on a job now. I wasn't sure how it would work because of some bad reviews but, I'm happy with it. I haven't had any problem with the batteries not lasting as long as expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful device, February 24, 2009
This little cut-out tool has proven fairly convenient for close-quarters applications (where a sawzall may not be practical). Although a variable speed control would be nice, I remain a satisfied Dewalt consumer and anticipate future purchases from Toolsbynet.

The tool works well. The only issue is that with the battery, its quite heavy. You can get cramping from using it to much without resting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Trying to find a purpose for it., May 26, 2006
I picked this exact item up on eBay for $40 plus $17 shipping. I had it in my mind that I could use this cut out shapes in wood as I am not a drywall, ceramic tile or acoustic ceiling installer. I also wanted to add to my collection of DeWalt 18v tools. Wow was I in for a surprise. This thing is so fast you cannot do much detail with it. The sawdust gets in the way of the cut line and if you don't keep a strong grip on it, it will just rip its way through the material whichever way it wants. Sort of like a skinny router. I did manage to get some crude shapes cut but they are not square all the way through the wood. I did think about using it to cut tenons because of the depth guide. I am sure it has lots of uses but I am still searching for them. Save your money and get the corded kit with circle cutter & handle unless you already on an 18v battery & charger.

1.0 out of 5 stars WAY TOO HEAVY!!!!, February 17, 2010
This review is from: Bare-Tool DEWALT DC550B 18-Volt Cordless Cut-Out Tool (Tool Only, No Battery) (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this too cut out dry wall and I was
about to tile the floor in one of my bedrooms. This tool with the correct blade did not cut any of the tile, as for the
18 volt battery..... it's way too top heavy.
A 12 or a 14 volt would have been a better choice. Save your money don't buy it!!!!!!
