Makita 5090D,
By A Customer
This review is from: Bare-Tool Makita 5090D 9.6-Volt 3-3/8-inch Cordless Saw (Tool Only, No Battery) (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is a great cordless circular saw for those light duty odd jobs...I used it to trim and cut cedar shakes while siding my house...a must for a job like this...it saved me the effort of lugging my table saw up to the roof... the saw will generally give you a full days worth of cutting b4 battery runs out...but I recommend having a spare battery around... not recommended for tough jobs, youll need a higher voltage or electric saw for those jobs...

When my dad saw this saw, he called it the "Barbie saw". It isn't a heavy duty saw, but for light work it does a real good job. It is quiet, and easy to use. It is real good for making accurate cuts in thin material--I find that it is easier to follow a line with this saw than with may larger Makita 7 1/4" circular saw. I only have one battery, but it lasts a long time and charges in one hour.

This is an excellent handheld saw. Small and light makes it easy to use and allows you to make accurate staright cut. By replacing to the Carbine tip blade, it cuts even better and easier. Blades are sometimes hard to find and often pricer than regular size blades due to supply and demand. Makita battery is very reliable and switchable with other cordless equipment justifys having more than one battery.

This is a great little saw for cutting 1x's, paneling and sheetrock. You need to flip over 2x due to blade size. The blade that it comes with is good for sheet rock. Buy a good carbide blade for cutting anything else. The size of it makes it great for tight places and it's surprisingly powerful and quiet. It runs a long time on a single charge. It's great for small jobs (what it was designed for).

a Remodelling Contractor in Seattle,
This review is from: Bare-Tool Makita 5090D 9.6-Volt 3-3/8-inch Cordless Saw (Tool Only, No Battery) (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this tool over a year ago, and out of frustration with its performance finally eliminated it from my shop recently. It seemed like a great idea - there are so few saw options out there for small-scale, detailed cuts. I tried this saw on several projects, and found it way too underpowered (even to cut a sheet of 1/4" masonite) for most of my application. Plus it is extremely noisy once the thin blade contacts and begins to cut the material. Finally, you have to be very careful how you use it because the blade can catch and run away on top of the material you are trying to cut - a dangerous situation. In summay, this might be good "convenience" tool for hobbyists cutting small craft materials, but for anything more serious, I recommend looking elsewhere, as I am now doing.

When I first got this saw and powered it up, I was pretty pessimistic about its capabilities. It has totally shattered all doubts. We have used it on ripping plywood, cutting studs, sheetrock, treated lumber, extruded aluminum, and it has always performed well. The treated lumber and 5/8" plywood slowed it down, but it's light weight and small size enables you to take it along in a tool belt where larger saws would be cumbersome. We have worked it beyond death, but it keeps going.

Emphasis on "little." But... for some projects, it is indispensible. I have 4 blades for this saw and when I need to make minor/small/precision cuts, especially in hard to get to places, it's my buddy.

This is one tool that really is just about useless. Can't cut plywood of any thickness, moldings, or just about anything else that's made of WOOD. Truly a waste of money. It has no torque and its miter adjustments are imprecise at best. I ***think*** this thing could cut paper, but I have better and cheaper tools (like a pair of scissors) for that job.
Take my word for it, don't throw your money away on this item. Porter Cable has a corded 4" that is a LOT better (though it costs more). This is probably the worst tool Makita makes.

I purchased this tool to make small cuts and I thought that because it was makita it would be awesome but, it was very noisy and performed like a cheap childs toy! It would not cut through the softest of pine without effort. I finally gave up on it and found out that by using a hand saw it saved a lot of time and worked better!! I would not buy this tool even if it cost $5.00. If I hadn't lost the reciept I would have took it back. I cant believe it is still in production DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK!!!!
