i own quite few 18v lithium ion makita tools and this grinder is one that i really appreciate. after reading other reviews, i wonder who would buy this with expectations of it performing on the same level as a corded model? i do a lot of interior steel stud framing and i use this grinder to cut the heads off of concrete anchors and to notch light gauge steel. this cordless grinder is GREAT for that and has a lot more torque than i expected. keep in mind that i understand tools and i know that having cordless convenience means some trade offs. it will stall out if i get stupid with it...but i use it for convenience and i know to take lighter cuts with it and to go slower than i would with a big corded unit. this thing is impressive and it will do a lot. i used it to sharpen lawn mower blades and it was great for that. i can also use it to cut thru chain links and small bolts and items that are away from electricity and would be difficult to run an extension cord to. it's a grat tool that can do a lot if you take your time and go slow on bigger tasks.

This is a very handy tool. Works great. I use it very often and can't really complain about it. It kind of goes through the batteries a little quicker than most of the LTX tools. Or maybe what I should say is that it requires a more charged battery. In other words once the battery is down so far it doesn't run this tool very well. But please understand that I usually am grinding off 3/4 inch stainless steel bolts or something of that nature. It's still awesome and great for just about any job.

I already have a BL1815 (1.5 Ah) battery and the quick charger prior to buying the BGA452Z. So I thought I could just just buy the bare tool and use it straight away with my existing battery.
Only realised later that the BL1815 (1.5 Ah). will not fit into the BGA452Z tool and that it will only take the larger capacity BL1830 (3.0Ah). I'm sure its a good tool but I will now have to spend additional money to buy the BL1830. Wish the information was clearly stated in the product discription.

This is a great addition to your cordless tool bag. I have used this grinder several times now for cutting, grinding small welds, and bolts, ect. It is great for light jobs, but will use up the battery pretty quick.

This is a dandy cordless grinder/cutoff tool. But don't expect it to replace your corded grinders or cutoff wheel tools. If you lay on it hard it shuts off immediately and you have to restart. You must cut or grind gently, keeping it's RPM's up. Or get out a cord and use a full strength grinder. That said, I'm glad I have one when I just need one cut or a little metal removed from something.

makita tools are my favorite, only because i have owned others. this angle grinder works as well for the battery life time as any of my corded grinders,so to be able to use it anywhere, puts it up there!

I install custom cabinets, and I must lug a bunch of tools around to each job. Therefore, the wieght versus usefulness of each tool is something I consider carefully. This tool has quickly become one of my essential tools. I no longer need to carry a belt sander to sand scribe edges, the grinder with a coarse sanding disk does that almost as well. It often saves the day because it can cut the materials my wood tools can't. When I need to cut steel - a bolt, a closet pole - I just pop a metal cutting disk on it. If I need to cut tile or stone or concrete - on goes the diamond blade and the job is done. It does use batteries quickly, but that's not a problem - I carry five in my bag and one is always on the charger. Now that I have figured it out, I find the red warning light quite useful. It goes on to warn you when the battery is getting low or you are overloading the motor - like pushing thr blade too hard or not cutting straight when cutting through metal. When the red light goes on it also releasews the switch lock if you have it on. This helps me remember to use the tool in such a way that the battery will last longer. For me, this tool was a great investment!

Great Grinder,

I've had a Makita XLT kit for about a year now, and there have been several occasions when I really wished that I could just snap an 18-volt battery on a portable grinder and do a small job. Finally, when my wife wasn't looking, I decided to pull the trigger--and am I glad I did. I used it immediately to cut through a metal sink drain (Think: water), a situation where a saw was clumsy and a 110v grinder would be folly. Fast and powerful cutting!
I would not recommend this tool for heavy-duty, repetitive work, but smaller for jobs it is convenient and more than adequate.

I have had a Ryobi grinder for years and it was fine as long as you did not need it to work more than five minutes or grind anything more than the galvanize coating off of metal, but this Makita is a real workhorse, the battery lasts and it seems to be just as powerful as my small corded Makita grinder

This is a very handy tool indeed. It will consume batteries fairly quickly, so you would want the 3.0ah cells for extended use. Of course any cordless tool that is run continuously will chew battery power, so I can't say this is a negative at all. The tool itself I find very comfortable to hold and use and it is well balanced front to back when battery pack installed. Indicator lights will even tell you when a battery is running low so you can take it off and recharge before it completely depletes itself. I have only used it so far for small cutting tasks but the included grinding disc seems to power through most thinner metals at great speed. Thicker metal takes a little longer of course.
Very handy tool to have if you already have other LXT tools or batteries. Ergonomic and simple to use. |
