Best Hammer Drill I've Had and I've Had Them All.,
I've worked construction for more than 10 years and I have had the 3 major brands: Milwaukee, DeWalt, Panasonic and Makita . And I can say that the Makita has come out on top for innovation, ruggedness and usability.
Milwaukee has reliable stuff but the Cordless drills are way too big, heavy and clumsy. I had them early on and found the tools very clumsy and too heavy which If you have to use a tool all day long, which I do you start getting worn out. Even their impact is heavy. Like I said the stuff never breaks but makes your arm gets sore after using it for a while. The V18 is the best thing they have but they haven't updated all of their tools to the modern standards of today. When I was looking the only thing that was out was the V28 which was extremely heavy and expensive. DeWalt has gone downhill I've seen more people change from DeWalt than from any other brand. My Dewalt drill's gears kept stripping out. so I go rid of my kit and that's hard to do since I had so many Dewalt tools. another thing is they don't have Lithium technology. They did but pulled it because of problems which I can see being very possible. I did also try out Panasonic but it seemed more of a woodworkers drill than a construction drill so that stayed at my house. It was a good drill but not for the every day abuse that you give your drill on a construction site. I bought the Makita LXT kit when it first came out and realized quickly that this brand is what I was looking for. It was a combination of lightweight, innovative and tough. I haven't had trouble with any of my Makita products except for my Charger which was screwing up my Batteries (which I took to the Makita service center and they replaced the charger and batteries with no problem. I Bought this BHP452 Drill 6 months ago from an online auction since you can't normally buy it by itself just with a kit. I use it every day and have had no problem with it yet and I treat it very rough. I use it for drilling out big holes with my step drill (which normally takes a toll on drills) I use the hammer drill all of the time and use it to drive all size of fasteners. Another great thing about this drill is you can get into small areas and there is a light for dark areas which in construction you don't have good lighting. This thing is a work horse. The Drill shows no sign of wearing down. This is the best drill I've had and like I said I've had them all.

This review is from: Bare-Tool Makita BHP452Z 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2-Inch Hammer Driver-Drill (Tool Only, No Battery) (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this tool to replace an older model I had in combo tool kit. I had bought the Makita LXT tools when they first hit the market due to their light weight and power. I have found them to be exceptional tools - good power, good battery life and overall very durable. My old drill from the kit has been used for professional installation work for high end electronics so it has seen a lot of hard use primarily drilling holes in metal and wood and also driving screws and bolts although the impact driver from my kit does most of the bolt driving. Recently the 3 speed gearbox on my drill has been slipping so I was pleased to find a bare tool replacement at a great price. You will not find this option at a box store! My batteries and charger are all in fine shape so all I needed was a new drill.
This drill is a little different than the original in that it only has a 2 speed gearbox, but if that means it'll run longer then so be it. I rarely used all 3 gears anyway. This is a great tool and the hammer drill function works as well as any portable battery drill.

This is not my first Makita LiIon tool so i assume it will hold up as well as the others. But performance wise - it does its job very well.
I have used it for less than a week. It is a nice companion (smaller and lighter) to my BDF-451 driver. It drove 40 3" ceramic screws in 2x lumber one morning and never bogged once. Hole saws, spade bits, drywall screws in metal or wood....were not a problem. But to be clear, I am not writing a review for a full size unit. This size and weight put it into the "compact" class, so don't expect it to do everything a larger 18v drill will do. But i would put it up against my larger Makita for 80% of my daily needs. And you do NOT need the medium range speeds like some posters are convinced.

I first bought the bigger/beefier BHP454Z because I thought it would work with the BL 1815 battery I already have. It also includes a side mounted hand and depth stop. On arrival I found I could not mount my battery due to a small blocker they have added to that drill. So then I downloaded the manuals for both drills to find you can only use the larger BL 1830 with that drill but you can use the smaller BL 1815 with this BHP452Z. I returned the 454Z and ordered this 452Z. The drill worked fine for my small project and I will use it occasionally to anchor things to my basement walls. If I were a contractor I'd buy the other drill assuming it is more rugged than this one.

I already owned a Makita BTD141 Impact Driver set. So when I saw this bare Hammer Drill on sale I could not resist. Since it uses the same battery it was a perfect purchase. I've been using a Makita 12 volt 3/8 inch cordless driver drill for over 3 years and there were times when I really needed a 1/2 in chuck which makes this purchase even better. The BHP452 works very well. It's quality is every bit as good as my other Makita tools. Drilling holes in concrete is easy with the hammer action. The half in chuck allows me to use my largest hole saws with enough torque to got the job done. I don't have to get my corded half inch drill and extension cord out any more.
The drill feel good in the hand. It is very comfortable, not too heavy and is one of the more compact hammer drills available. Balance is good making it easy to handle and position. The belt hook comes in real handy too. Only thing I wish it had is a leveling bubble on the back and top. You won't go wrong if you buy this drill. I noticed the comments about the batteries in some of the other reviews. I have not had any such problems with any of my Makita batteries. It might be the charger that is not working well.

This is a very nice drill. It's very powerful, easy to use, has many good features, is well-balanced, light, and has an excellent grip. Also, the 1/2" chuck (as opposed to 3/8" on some drills) is very useful for larger bits.
One feature I especially like is the ability to select whether you're screwing, drilling, or using the impact drill. This comes in really handy when you want to quickly switch from drilling a hole to putting a screw in it because the amount of torque is automatically adjusted when switching from drilling to screwing (less torque when screwing, to prevent stripping the hole). In addition to these selectors, you can also adjust the torque setting to make further adjustments. These are settings not often found on corded drills, and one of the main reasons I decided to get a cordless one. Having used a corded drill for the past few years, another feature I really like is the electric brake. Most corded drills don't have an electric brake, so when you release the trigger, all that stops the drill is friction. In this case of this drill (and most other cordless drills), there is an electric brake, so the drill stops right away after releasing the trigger. This comes in really useful when putting in screws because it prevents over-tightening them. Another notable feature is the LED for illuminating what you're doing. It works quite well most of the time, although due to its position it doesn't light up the whole area that you're drilling/screwing. In terms of reliability, this drill seems quite good. I can't say much about other brands, but what I can say is that my dad has had the 14.4V version of this drill for over 5 years and it has held up quite well to the abuses of everyday work as a cabinet installer.

Only 4 stars because its not as beefy as its brother the 454z, but this tool
is made to be lighter with less fatigue and for that it has the power and battery life to handle any home job i've thrown at it. The collar on the chuck looks like a composite material versus the metal on the 454z. Manufactured in China.
