4.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative descriptions, August 31, 2008

(REAL NAME)
I borrowed this book from an old friend who, like myself, was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale. We are both Medicare age now, and we can remember when it was a small town. There was a lot of undeveloped land, still wild and difficult to traverse, not only out to the west, but east all the way to the beach and Port Everglades. This book centered around individuals and their daily lives, but I was drawn in through the vivid descriptions of the land and waterways the mailman had to navigate from Palm Beach to Miami. I remembered many of those areas, and the author carried me along as though I were with him. An easy read, I think you will enjoy this book especially if you are from there or are familiar with the area as it is today.

I really enjoyed this book as I live on the Florida Treasure Coast. It is fun to read and can be a great book for someone that does not have the patience to tackle a 300 page book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I never tire of reading it, February 14, 2009
I was born in West Palm Beach in the early 50's and have lived in Florida all my life. My grandmother was born in Florida also and she had many tales to tell of south Florida during her life as a homesteader. This book however should appeal to just about anyone no matter where they're from since it has it all - action, adventure, hilarity, history and pure romance - the real thing. I have read the story many times and continue to enjoy the heck out of it and I'm certain I always will. Some day maybe someone will do it justice with a good movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Regular mail..., June 3, 2011
This review is from: The Barefoot Mailman (Paperback)
I had forgotten how much we enjoyed this book, bought in 1985, as a beautifully re-binding of a paperback in a very long-established independent bookshop in Oviedo. A light-history, written as a novel but closely following the facts - there really was a celebrated character who had the job of walking the mail between Palm Beach and Miami, along the coast; as the interior of Florida was then impenetrable (and the beaches open and un-developed too. Sigh!)

Some of the adventures seem more like the old-fashioned `tall tales' - but surely, crossing Florida swamps with their common population of snakes, bug and gators was hardly an every-day for the mailman. Incredibly it was a reliable service too.

Great reading, particularly if you live in the cracker-state itself, but sadly, impossible now to recreate the route.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little book, January 5, 2011
This review is from: The Barefoot Mailman (Paperback)
A great little book about delivering the mail by foot, along the beach, from Palm Beach Florida to Miami. Back in the days before there were roads and the boats were unreliable.Fiction but with a lot of historical facts thrown in. If you should happen to be an old timer who grew up along the Florida east coast you will especially enjoy this book, it brings back a lot of old memories. There is even a cute little love story thrown in. Nice easy read.
