Interesting first time out as a 4-piece,

This was BNL's first show without founding member Steve Page. There were times you could tell that the guys taking over songs that Steve normally lead are still finding their footing on them, but overall, it was still a good, fun, BNL show. I'm going to see them live (again) in June, and can't wait to see the new dynamic in person, and this disc helped convince me that even with the updated line-up, BNL is still going to be a worthwhile show.

I found out about this show the same week I heard Steven Page quit the band. My tickets were purchased more in support of the past than great expectations for the future. I enjoy the solo projects and thought perhaps they would rely more heavily on that material. I was completely wrong. Not only did they tackle the challenge with all the energy BNL is celebrated for, they also hinted at the potential new directions for the future.
This is an excellent recording which shows the band looking for new footing. The mechanics slip up from time to time - a missed vocal here or there, a bit of uncertain interplay. What isn't missing is the joy of playing, the glee in entertaining, the power of music and listener together. It was the best show I've seen from BNL for some time and reminded me why I first fell in love with them as a live act. Steven's vocals are picked up fearlessly by all (and I do mean all) of the other band members. Songs I loved are still enjoyable, songs I didn't care for reveal themselves differently. (I can't say I'll ever be overjoyed to hear "Maybe Katie" or "Shopping", but I certainly gained new respect for them.) Kevin Hearn picks up a large part of the vocals (going solo on "Sound Of Your Voice). His voice is slender, with a bluegrass slant. Ed's country affinity is picked up and carried out with the pairing. It would be a strong new element for BNL if they choose to explore it and is well showcased on the medley of "Crazy/Fox On The Run". Jim Creeggan easily carries his tracks with the stage confidence he always displays. You get the impression they could tell Jim he'd be singing AC/DC's entire back catalog tonight and he'd reply "Sure, let's go." Tyler Stewart's the real vocal surprise. This is a great set list as well - "These Apples", "Never Is Enough", "Long Way Back Home", "Big Bang Theory" - Ed is well showcased. I told people the question I was asking myself that night wasn't "Is this still BNL" but rather "Do I like this band?" The answer is a resounding yes. I love this band. These four guys are a sure thing.
