Owen Barfield, the fourth most famous Inkling (after J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis & Charles Williams), is a very good formal poet & a man of profound genius. For those interested in his work, this is a great introduction; although many will prefer to read his nonfiction first, which is his forte. If you are familiar with his literary theories and would like to see him put them into action, you will definately want to get this. The poetry in this book deserves 5 stars; I lowered this to 4 stars because: 1) the book seems rather short for a sampler; 2) the three short stories, though not the nouvelles, were boring; 3) the truncation of "The Rose on the Ash-heap" detracted a lot from its total value. Also, it would have benefited considerably by including a sampling of his essays as well. Of the nouvelles "The Rose on the Ash-heap" is a fantasy, and "Night Operation" is sf. I found both very intriguing. "Night Operation", placed in the 22nd century, sets forth many of Barfield's most important ideas on the nature of words, the evolution of consciousness, etc. Both nouvelles are rated R for sexual content.
