Shape

Try Barilla's Gluten Free Elbows pasta! Elbows, “Gomiti” or “Chifferi” in Italian, are named for their twisted, cylindrical shape that can vary in size. Pasta Elbows originate from Northern and Central Italy, where they are traditionally used in soups.

Texture

Barilla Elbows are ridged with an extra twist, giving it a more sophisticated texture that helps hold the sauce. You can take this pasta beyond the expected in any number of traditional Italian meals, including baked pasta dishes, or tossed with vegetable or cheese sauces.

Preparing This Pasta

1. Bring 4 - 6 quarts of water to a rolling boil, add salt to taste.2. Add contents of package to the boiling water. Stir gently.3. Return to a boil. For authentic "al dente" pasta, boil uncovered, stirring occasionally for 7 minutes. For more tender pasta, boil for an additional 1 minute.4. Remove from heat. Drain well.5. Serve immediately with your favorite Barilla sauce.

My wife has been on a gluten free diet for a few years now, which means I get to try a lot of gluten free food too. It's just too much trouble to prepare two separate pans of pasta all the time so when we make pasta (which is often, since we are Italian), I eat what she eats. We have tried a variety of gluten free pastas and the vast majority suck. Most have a bitter or strong nutty/soy flavor and they are difficult to cook. Many are tough. We found one rice pasta that was passable but just barely and it had a very gritty texture. It also took a long time to cook. It was awful re-heated. Barilla Plus was my pasta of choice for a healthier pasta before my wife went gluten free so when I saw this, I thought we would give it a try. It is really good. I'm not going to lie to you, it doesn't taste exactly like semolina pasta but it is very close and far, far better than any other gluten free pasta I've had. This and the R brand are the only 2 gluten free pastas I've had that are worth eating. The taste and texture are very similar to the real thing. The instructions say to cook it for 10-11 minutes. I cooked it for 10:30 and it was perfect. Both my wife and I liked it. So if you are on a gluten free diet, give this a try.

My son is celiac so we know a lot about GF products. I've tried over a dozen GF pastas and this is maybe the best. I was really surprised that a mass market product like this would be so good.

It cooks up nicely and has a good firm texture and good taste. It doesn't overcook quickly like a lot of GF pastas. It's not much different than regular Barilla pasta.

It's made from a corn/rice mix. Our usual GF pasta is a corn/quinoa mix, and probably has better nutritional content. But at least the Barilla isn't all rice like a lot of other GF products. It's relatively inexpensive too, and the box has 12 ounces instead of the 8 ounces you typically get with other GF pastas. We will buy this again.

I was surprised at how good the Barilla Gluten Free Pene pasta turned out! It has the best texture and taste of any GF pasta I've tried. It is getting very close to that of wheat pasta. And, I've tried a lot of GF pastas.

I like my pasta a bit al dente and this came out perfect. The combination of corn and rice seems just right. But then who knows pasta like Barilla?

For exceeding my expectations Barilla GF Penne Pasta earns 5 stars from me.

Update: Jan 21, 2014
I had dinner with friends with Barilla GF Penne Pasta. As usual it turned out quite good and the texture in particular was darn good al dente. Everyone spoke highly about how very nice the Penne turned out. This reenforces my opinion of the quality of this GF Pasta.

And now I need 25 more words.

First, I'm celiac. If this were not gluten-free, I'd be telling you that, in a not-nice tone of voice. This is truly gluten-free.

And, it's gluten-free pasta that you won't notice is gluten-free. Unlike some of Barilla's other gluten-free pastas, this is not just corn. (They actually make really good gluten-free pasta that is meant to be eaten almost naked, tossed with a little reggiano and blanched roma tomatoes, which is apparently an actual, not-meant-to-be-gluten-free Italian thing.) This, is not that.

It's rice and corn--and clearly meant for macaroni and cheese. I boiled this for sixteen minutes (please ignore the package directions), drained it, and then added shredded medium Tillamook cheddar and cultured butter to the bowl. Halfway through, I had to remind myself I wasn't eating wheat.

OMG, yum. Back to eating.

My household is not gluten free, but we buy a number of gluten free products in order to entertain xgfx friends, and as a way of varying our diet. We are fond of a brand of quinoa spaghetti, so we tested this new Barilla product with apprehension. Happily, we thoroughly enjoyed it. The taste and texture are surprisingly close to wheat spaghetti, and I think many people will not notice the difference, especially when covered with sauce. It is a bit firmer than wheat spaghetti, both in the cooking process and the final result. It softens slowly, so you may want to stand by and stir to keep it under the water and to avoid clumping. I suggest cooking it for approximately 1 minute longer than the package directions. The firmer texture and the corn-rice flavor are most noticeable when cold, so take note if you are planning a cold pasta salad. These are not objectionable characteristics, just differences for which you may want to account in such a recipe. This fine product will definitely go into our pasta rotation in the future.
