You are getting whole grain but you are also getting additional fiber, protein and the big bonus of Omega 3 fats which is a real plus.

The elbows can be hard to find here, so it is convenient and cheaper to buy in bulk.

This isn't just healthy pasta (although it is that). It's delicious!!! My husband, who totally hates whole-wheat pasta (he'll eat whole-wheat bread, if pushed against the wall, but absolutely holds out against whole-wheat pasta) adores this. He prefers it to any other pasta. Now, if it's out of stock at the store, he grumbles and won't buy his old favorite brands as a substitute. I love that it tastes so good that we can serve a healthy pasta dinner for unsuspecting company without anyone asking what on earth we did to the food. We're thrilled to see that it will soon be available on Amazon so we can stock up!

This thin spaghetti is actually my favorite -- works for both spaghetti and angel hair dishes, and has a light taste and texture that fools non-health-foodies into thinking they're having unusually good ordinary pasta.

Flavor Name: PenneSize Name: Pack of 12 Verified Purchase
Information provided by Barilla:
1. Pasta that is sold in the US is produced in Ames, Iowa (except for a few varieties that are produced in Italy and imported).
2. Barilla Plus pasta contains the following nutrition (from the side panel, per 2oz serving): 210 Calories, <2g Total Fat, 25mg Sodium, 4g Dietary Fiber, 2g Sugar, 10g Protein. Vitamins and minerals include B-vitamins (Thiamin, Niacin, Riboflavin, Folate), Iron and a negligible amount of Calcium. That's 16% daily fiber and 12% daily protein per 2oz serving!
3. Ingredients: Flour Blend of Semolina, Lentils, Chickpeas, Flax seed, Barley, Oats, Spelt and Durum. There's also egg whites, oat fiber, B-vitamins and iron (ferrous sulfate).
4. There are 360mg Omega 3's in 100g (approximately 3.6oz), providing 27% of the daily value for ALA omega-3.

Pros:
1. The protein provided in this pasta is NOT provided by soy or whey. There have been many studies on the negative effects of soy on hormone regulation, so it's probably not a good idea to rely on it as your main protein source. Whey is derived from cows milk, which is a no-no if you're lactose intolerant or if you avoid the source for personal reasons. Protein from egg whites and legumes sounds good to me!
2. I used to just eye-ball the amount of pasta I'd make and then freeze left-overs in containers for lunch. I decided to weigh out 2oz of this pasta out of curiosity and I was pleasantly surprised at how much pasta it made and how satisfying it was. Although the fiber content is not as high as that in whole-grain pastas, the protein must really boost the pasta's ability to make you feel full.
3. I don't mind 100% whole wheat or whole grain pasta.

Flavor Name: FarfalleSize Name: Pack of 8 Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Far from being an empty calorie food, this pasta is packed with protein, fiber, and omega 3s. Plus it's delicious, I like the taste and texture better than either regular pasta varieties or the whole grain versions--which can tend to be a little heavy and granular. It's a good choice for vegetarians because of the extra protein, but because it includes egg whites it's not appropriate for vegans.

Flavor Name: FarfalleSize Name: Pack of 8 Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )

These farfalle (butterfly or as we call them, bowtie) pasta are made with lentils, chickpeas, barley, oats, spelt and egg whites in addition to wheat. This makes them higher in fiber and protein, but they still have a decent consistency and flavor UNLIKE WHOLE WHEAT pasta, which I consider a crime against pasta. I have NEVER liked whole wheat pasta. It's bitter, it has an odd texture and if I want more fiber, I add more vegetables to my sauce. However, plain wheat pasta is just basically carbs. Here, the legumes add complete protein (because the lysine-poor wheat is boosted by the amino acids in the legumes to make a complete protein. Lysine is one of the essential amino acids, but it's low in wheat.)

So these farfalle taste great and are more nutritious than plain semolina flour noodles. If you feel you'd like a more nutritious option to pasta, I think Barilla Plus is excellent and the taste does not suffer. They are actually far more nutritious than (gag) whole wheat pasta, so you can hold your head up and serve these, feeling you are being nutritionally responsible (unless you are gluten-free, in which case, why are you reading this?)

You can use these for Kasha Varnishkes. This is a traditional Jewish recipe, with bowties, kasha (buckwheat groats) and mushrooms. In our family, we did not use the pasta version but most people do use the bowties. You can look up this recipe anywhere. I don't make it anymore, being allergic to buckwheat (go figure.) But it's very rich and tasty, and it goes well with roasts or makes a good dish on its own. If you are adding new grains to your diet, Kasha can be quite interesting. It has an unusual, musky-fruity flavor (as it's not really a grain) but many people like it.

If you want to eat a healthier pasta, but don't like the taste of the whole grain pastas, then be SURE to give this a try! I made the recipe on the back of the box, the Farfalle with Shrimp Ragout, but I substituted Italian meatballs for the shrimp and the white wine with a red Port. AMAZING! The boys dove into this like they'd never eaten before and that dish was gone literally in seconds. Wonderful light recipe and very tasty. Just as an aside, always try the recipes on the boxes of pasta - one in particular, San Giorgio's Lasagna recipe on their lasagna box is so outstanding, it wins awards!

Anyway, this pasta contains 20% of your recommended daily protein and 28% of your daily fiber requirement. In addition, it also This contains 27% of your daily recommended Omega 3s. So, you're eating something better than plain pasta, but the texture is such that it isn't grainy or chewy like whole grain pasta can be sometimes. Also, this is NOT a whole-grain pasta, but is made up of a blend of grains and I think, personally, it's quite flavorful.

Or, you can just ask the boys in this house what they thought - they strongly dislike the whole grain pastas. But with this box, they never knew they were eating anything but regular white pasta. That's how good this stuff is. One aside, however, if you are making this prior to sporting games, I wouldn't. They're not supposed to eat protein prior to a game or working out since your stomach cannot be in an activity and digesting protein at the same time. Side aches result and cause them to have to stop.

AWESOME product, SO glad I got to try this. I'm going to be buying this as my new staple. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
