I purchased this hat for myself to go on a rainy Alaskan cruise. It was the only black hat I could find and I didn't know if it would be what I wanted. However, when I wore it in the rain, I was very plesantly surprised to see that even though it is leather, it is definately weatherproof. It was misty rain everywhere we went and I didn't have to use an umbrella, which was extremely nice. Just my raincoat and hat...I looked too cool and had 4 people try to trade me out of my hat - both men AND women. I did remove the band and replaced it with a more glitzy, feminine band, but I plan on changing it back for everyday where.

Amazing hat! I have wanted one for years and am so happy with my purchase. I ride/train horses and wear the hat on my rides. I love it!

I have this black model 1022 which is a heavier stiffer leather for winter, as well as the Kangaroo leather-model 1018 in hickory crackle for summer (kangaroo hide is lighter and more supple). Those are my two favorite models from Barmah.
Highly recommend for style and function.

I've had this hat many years now. On a cruise to Bahamas, my face was the only place I didn't get sunburned due to this hat. Even wore it out swimming. Hat got partially wet and shows minimal signs of being in the Atlantic ocean. It is still a great hat. I did remove the band when I received it so it would look less Aussie. Also added a leather chinstrap to save having to chase the hat up on the windy cruise ship. I keep the chinstrap attached and hidden in the top when not in use. I am currently looking to buy a a duplicate as a backup in case it gets stolen in my car.

This item was purchased after seeing the brand on someone's bush hat.
Other brands were half the price, but this is what I knew, and this is what I wanted to purchase. It has not disappointed: I have gotten positive comments on my hat's viability to own, and on a rainy day, the leather is waterproof to an amazing degree. After being soaked, it dried off in little time and did not leave behind a nasty odor of wet leather.
Its wide brim prevents sunburned skin in the facial and neck areas, and it is easy to store, by folding it up and inserting it into the canvas bag that arrives with the hat.
In short, others may copy the design, but Barmah quality is worth the extra money.
