5.0 out of 5 stars Barn
John Pawson and Fi McGhee's BARN provides an atmospheric look at the transformation of a derelict barn into a modern living and working space. It is a tiny book, with very few words. Instead of words, McGhee's crisp, black-and-white photos are used to provide considerable detail of the gradual process of reclaiming a nearly-lost old building. In the end, the rebuilt...

Maybe I can only give this one star because it did not meet my expectations. I pictured a documentary-like story via photos of the rebuilding of an old barn into a home. This book is trying to be a little too artsy (for my taste) & takes minimalist to extreme. No writing at all - B & W photos, some blurry. What has a naked toddler to do with any of this? Its a...

Its a tiny book to boot. If you like extreme artsy stuff with little content beyond what I've described, hey, go for it. I'm returning the book.

In the end, the rebuilt building is a striking blend of old and new - at least, new in the sense of Pawson's clean, minimalist approach to design. Clearly, Pawson and McGhee never intended to provide an instructional, how-to book - although an alert, imaginative reader could learn a lot from this book. I think BARN is a very beautiful book, and I have returned to it again and again for years.
