Grade 3-5--While this work focuses on a family of European birds, the informa tion is applicable to North American barn owls as well. After a brief overview of this species' physical characteristics, habits, and habitat, Epple introduces a pair of barn owls for readers to follow through courtship, mating, and the rais ing of their young. The direct text and open format will encourage young read ers, but the spectacular full-color photo graphs will attract nature enthusiasts of all ages. The clarity and detail are amaz ing, especially since most of the pictures were taken at night and many inside a barn. Brief mention is made of only a few of the hazards the owls face, and the conclusion, which discusses the rela tionship between farmers and the birds, does not mention problems with pesti cides. More of a photo-essay than an inclusive text, this is one of the best en tries in this series.

This is a wonderful book about barn owls living in, you guessed it, barns in a rural part of England. The photographs are marvelous close-ups of beautiful adults and precious owlets. The book gives lots of information about barn owl families in an interesting, very readable narrative style. Highly recommended.
