One night the wind blows through the barn and causes Cow to sneeze, which sets off a sneezy chain reaction. Each barn animal sneezes in turn, until a cacophony of sneezing fills the night, waking Sue in the farmhouse. Young children will delight in Karen B. Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

reSchool-K-A nighttime gust of wind sets off a chain reaction through a barn full of animals. The unimaginative text that follows begins with a sneezing cow: "'Moo-CHOO. Moo-CHOO.' The hay blew. Pig awoke. 'Oink-CHOO. Oink-CHOO.' She tripped and fell on Horse's shoe." Eventually the sounds wake young Sue, who decides "Some tea might do!" She cures the animals, but the story ends with her sneezing. Amateurish illustrations that look like crayon drawings fail to show movement, and the animals are stiffly rendered. The only artistic indication of a sneeze is in the form of thick white lines radiating from their mouths. The spreads are poorly designed, often blending together at the gutter in a confusing way that makes two separate scenes appear like one. Stick with Lynn Downey's The Flea's Sneeze (Holt, 2000), Ruth Brown's The Big Sneeze (Morrow, 1997) or Patricia Thomas's Stand Back, Said the Elephant, I'm Going to Sneeze (Lothrop, 1990) and skip this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Barn Sneeze" is Barn Wonderful!, July 7, 2002

Hallie Lerman (Los Angeles, Ca. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Barn Sneeze (Hardcover)
"Barn Sneeze" is an adorable and playful book that young children will love. Both the reader and the readee are active participants in this wonderful journey involving a barnyard, the animals and their sounds. I am truly baffled by the first reviewer from School Library Journal. Her comments reflect something other than a true appreciation for this beautiful book. Karen Winnick's exquisite illustrations display her magical talent as an artist. She possesses an intuitive eye for color and her animals express movement and feeling! I loved how one sneeze led to one animal and to another, like a link on chain that connects us all. "Barn Sneeze" is a magical and lively book that is a must read for the very young people in our lives, who love animals and their sounds.

Hallie

My 3 year old grandaughter loved this book. In fact she has memorized it and walks around reciting it. What a clever and imaginative book. Karen Winnick has another winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars My students loved Barn Sneeze, June 7, 2002

Our preschool class was laughing aloud as we went from animal to animal, mimicking the sounds of their sneezes. It is also a good learning tool to reinforce the names of familiar barnyard animals and the sounds they are known to make. A fun and silly book that provides an easy read for teachers and parents.
