Engler, on the other hand, shows readers how to renovate or restore an existing barn, shed, or outbuilding. Not only does this save money but it also preserves structures with potential historic significance. Engler shows how to evaluate a barn's condition and what is needed to restore it to its original use or to turn it into housing. This title's black-and-white illustrations are comparatively drab but serve their intended purpose. Neither title is essential, but comprehensive collections or those with special interests in custom homes or rural living will find them both worthwhile.

If you're thinking about building a timber frame home, get this book for inspiration. It's a portfolio of thirty-two of the remarkable homes built by Tony Hanslin's company, Yankee Barn Homes. Each is presented in beautiful color photographs and with floor plans. You'll get ideas for details, finishes, furnishing, decorating and landscaping your new home. You'll learn about the flexibility and durability of this ancient method of construction, and you'll see the great, barn-like soaring spaces that can only be built with timber frames. Timber frame homes are more expensive than most, but this book is a bargain, and dreams are free!

This was a gift for my son who is in the process of designing his first custom home. The combination of both pictures and design plans have helped him make some key decisions. If you just like Barn Style homes and enjoy the architecture or if you are dead serious about building your own Barn Home I would suggest that this would be a great initial starting point for both concept and ideas. He is using several of the concepts as a template for his new dream house. I give it a 5 Star rating as a great idea book!
