Seems like you could make one for about $2 worth of rope and a hunk of steel, but if you have a crossbow you need this.
After cocking my 150 lb crossbow about 4 times during target practice, my fingers had had it! I used this once, then took up a little slack in the rope and would NEVER go back to hand cocking again. It seems like it took 90% of the effort to cock it away. Made it so easy to cock that I could practice all day. Best investment I made for my crossbow, that and I can use it on other bows too. Works great.

Why wouldn't you use this?,

It took me 2 years of crossbow hunting to realize that pulling the string back by hand just didn't make sense. Hopefully it wont take you that long! Don't know why I resisted buying something so simple. This thing works great. No problem with the rope hooks jumping off the string. You simply loop the rope over the stock notch and slide your hands down toward the bowstring while holding the hooks and hook the string. Grab the handles and pull. String is locked centered on the stock every time. I know this because my string has centering marks on it. They were needed to adjust the string to center after cocking by hand. For the record, I have a Barnett Quad 400 and love that too. I imagine that this will work with many other brands as well.
The only other thing I can say is that this device seems very well made. I know that I can't make it for the few dollars it cost to buy it. I'm sure the parts are cheap but my time isn't. I would highly recommend this to anyone with a crossbow.

Barnett Rope Cocking Device
I bought this device afer I had purchased a new crossbow. And just getting into the sport of crossbow hunting. After learning that it is very difficult if not impossible to cock a crossbow by hand. This device makes it a breeze. My daughter can even do it. A must for any crossbow shooter.

Shorten rope and good to go..,

The rope lenght is too long, so just pull the end knot out of the handles and put in a new knot taking up some rope on both sides. The plastic hooks that actually pull on the bow string will have less chance to slip off if you first put the rope around the stock then hook on to the string. Thats all it take to make it perfect!

Trying to hand cock is painful. This device makes it so much easier. The hooks seem a little sloppy, and fall off easily. Pull the string out of the handle and tie a new knot to make it the perfect length for your crossbow. The picture provided by amazon is not the one I received. On the end of mine are two handles I would describe as similar to the handle on a pull string for a lawn mower.

Clumsy but efficient,

These are clumsy but get the Job done. They make it much easier to cock even heavy pull crossbows.
They need (in my opinion) a clip to keep them on the bow string while you run the rope around behind the reciever or stock.

I recently purchased a Barnett crossbow, with the crank handle, and while the crank is nice it is not practical for target shooting and reloading in the field. I ordered the cocking rope and man it is great, I now wish I wouldn't have paid the extra 100 bucks for the crank. With the rope, I can put it on pull it up and I am ready to shoot again in a matter of 30 seconds, vs. 2 minutes or more with the crank. I would highly recommend this quality product.

I got my crossbow the day before I got my cocking rope. I only shot it 6 times. Its all I could handle. I couldn't pull the 150lb crossbow anymore. I got the rope the next day, and it was amazing. I had to shorten the rope about a foot and a half, but could pull the bow so much easier. I spent half the day shooting with little fatige. This is a must have for any crossbow owner.

If you are practicing and are shooting over 2 bolts this will help you slow down and concentrate on each shot. Make sure you mark your bow string for center because it will pull to one side or the other everytime. I have not tried this in the treestand as I am still unsure of wether or not I want to trust it in that scenerio. On the ground this is a 5 and at practice sesion a 5 but in the field unsure.
