I have spent alot of time looking at various bows but even the cheapest of hunting bows tend to cost around $300. This bow costs a little more than half that price when it is fully kitted out. This bow comes with a detachable quiver, a 3 reticle sight, and an arrow rest. The sight isn't fantastic, but it works just fine. I also wasn't thrilled with the arrow rest that it came with. It promptly went in the gawbage and was replaced with a whisker biscuit. The quiver is pretty good, but it only holds 3 arrows. It is a good idea to replace the quiver with a model that holds at least four arrows.
Another great feature that this bow has is that it is very adjustable. Parts of the cams are replacable to adjust the draw legnth. The bowstring can be tigntened on the cams to allow the draw weight to be adjusted up to 45 lbs. Screws can also be adjusted on the bow to reduce the draw weight to around 25 pounds. The bow comes with a draw weight of 41 lbs.

Pros:
very adjustable
powerful enough to hunt deer with
small enough to fire while sitting
comes with 3 arrows
easy to shoot
very affordable
lightweight
sight is pretty good
great for young shooters

Cons:
arrow rest isn't great
quiver isn't the best

My son (8) wanted a bow for Christmas. I almost bought the cheaper Bear Brave III at Wal-Mart, but decided against it and researched a bit on the web, and went to my local Gander Mountain to look at real bows. (I am not an archer or hunter, so I am not an expert). I saw the Vortex, but it's price was rather high (159 + tax). The clerk there explained how to measure the proper draw length for my kid, so I did and discovered the Brave III was way too small. The Vortex, however is adjustable from 21-27 inches, which gave a lot of room to grow. I set the draw for 23", backed off the tension to about 27 lbs. (which took all of 15 minutes with the included tools and hardware),and we were shooting in the backyard. This is not a toy bow by any stretch, just a bit smaller in the handgrip for smaller hands, and anything you may find for under $100.00 will be little better than a toy and will probably frustrate your kid.

I only have 1 complaint. The 3 aluminum arrows that came with the bow are crap. They are too heavy (at least at the current draw weight) and guaranteed to bend the first time they hit the ground, and they WILL hit the ground. We bought a few lighter carbon arrows at the local archery shop and his shooting has drastically improved, hitting the target at least 2 out of 3 shots with a pretty tight pattern, he is learning quick. These arrows will still break and take a beating, but they don't bend. They will set you back about 4 bucks each though. At $125 including shipping, the Barnett Vortex is the cheapest real bow capable of actually killing something you will find. I recommend it if you want to introduce your kid to archery without breaking the bank.

Good size for my granddaughter who had an archery class last summer at church camp. She is 17 and just wanted something to shoot targets with. It's perfect for her size and strength. She is enjoying it. Unfortunately for me - today I found the very same bow at Gander Mountain for $50 less than what I purchased it for on Amazon.com.

I bought this bow for my wife so she would shoot with my daughter (shoots JOAD) and me. My wife is only 4'9" and has never shot before so I wanted her to have a good experience from the start. This bow was the perfect choice. Was able to adust draw to 21" and weight to 20# without a press. Kept the sight as it was adequate for target and 3D beginner. Replaced the rest with a QAP Ultra Rest drop rest. Left the quiver off and bought some Easton 1616's to use in place of the heavy arrows that come with it. She quickly became able to group about 6" at 20 meters and doesn't feel totally outclassed by other shooters. I contacted Barnett because the instructions for the bow were not included in my package. They were very responsive and helpful. The company stands behind their product and I think I made the right choice after considering the Genesis, Nuclear ICE, and others like it. The Vortex is really in a class by itself.

Pro:
High quality
Highly adjustable draw span
Highly adjustable draw weight
Adequate sight
Great customer support

Con:
Possibly adequate rest (never tried it)
3-arrow quiver (never used it)
Arrows (possibly a good compromise but may not fit your usage)

Note: A product this comprehensive is going to have some compromises. Fortunately, they are not in the bow itself and having that good foundation leaves the owner many options to make this a product that will fulfill the mission.

i bought this bow for my girlfriend to try and get her into bow hunting, Its perfect for her size and its not to hard for her to pull back, she loves it the only set back to this bow is the sight, quiver, and the rest they are cheap. if you spend a little extra in upgrades such as a peep sight and a d loop this is a great bow for the price.

The bow itself is perfect for a beginner (child, women, young man). I bought this bow for my wife because she wants to target shoot with me. It is perfect for just shooting around the yard or the range. The bow is nice, but the quiver, arrow rest, and sight are very low quality. I'm sure I can find cheap replacements here on Amazon that will be better. I'm not sure I would have purchased this bow for her if she were going to use it to hunt. It's not that it doens't have enough power, because you can crank it up to 45 pounds or so, but rather I don't see it lasting out in the woods and elements. It shoots really well and is very accurate. Construction of it seems durable enough for occasional use. Like I said, good bow for the price.
