Those who would normally expect the quantum leap in magic the big screen makes possible will be very disappointed. After putting out $$ apiece for me and the kids, we walked out of the theater after only one hour and ten minutes feeling ripped off. A Kid's Review
I am twelve, so it is rather weird for me to say that I really enjoyed this movie! Last autumn my parents got it from the library for my little brother, who is two. I was sure it would be a normal boring Barney movie, so I didn't watch it. Then I took a peek at the movie in the middle, just after they lost the egg, and wathced until the end. The next day I watched from the beginning until where I left off. It is better than anything Barney has done so far! I especially liked it because I was rather depressed at the time, and the themes of the movie were to use your imagination and never give up.

The movie starts when Abagail, a girl of about eight, her older brother Cody, and Abagail's best friend Marcella, all take a trip to Grandma and Grandpa's farm. Cody is a pessimist and is not looking forward to the trip, so when the two girls try to get him to play pretend with them, he steals their Barney doll and hides it in the shower. Then Barney comes to life! Cody keeps trying to get rid of him or at least show him to their grandparents to prove that he is not real, but nithing works. That night Cody is encouraged by Barney to wish upon a star, so Cody bursts out, "I wish we could have a real adventure this summer! Do things no one else has done before. That would be cool."

Cody's wish came true in an unexpected way when the star he wishes upon falls from the sky and turns into an egg that Cody finds in his barn the next day. The three kids and Barney take the egg to Mrs. Goldfinch, an eccentric lady who loves birds. After a lot of research, she tells them that it is a Dream Maker and that when all five rings change color they must take it back to the place where Cody first found it, the barn. Just then the egg falls out the window, and the adventure that follows includes a parade, a fancy French restaraunt, a circus, and a balloon launching. In the end Cody learns that imagination is a great thing to have.

The movie has some wonderful songs, including "Barney's world of imagination," "Imagine," "What's inside it?," "We're gonna find a way," and "You can do anything (from the credits)." For once, the Barney kids were not goody-goody, and did not seem to be reciting their lines in the boring monotone that is on the TV show, but with real expression. Probably the dumbest scene was when the man was driving and cooking at the same time. It is a great movie that people of all ages will enjoy, and it also teaches the lessons of perseverance and imagination without rubbing in morals. Everyone in my family, my little brother, me, even my parents, thought it was really good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Barney's Great Adventure is SUPER-DE-DOOPER!, January 22, 2000
This review is from: Barney - Barney's Great Adventure (DVD)
When we took our daughter to see this movie in the theater, I was prepared to be, in a word, bored! However,it turns out I was pleasantly surprised! This movie is a pure delight! Our daughter, (who, at the time, had the attention span of a gnat), was rivetted to the non-stop action on screen, and my husband and I found ourselves enjoying it as well. (As a matter of fact, I never got bored; not once)! In the movie, Barney, along with some kids visiting a farm, discover a mysterious egg. In order for the egg to hatch, they must keep it safe, (and trust me, this egg gets into a lot of hot water)! The movie is jam-packed with bright colorful action shots, suspense, and a story line that's easy enough for a three year old to follow, (and I know this for a fact, because that was my daughter's age when we first saw it)! Now we own the DVD, and my daughter can embark on this excellent great adventure, any time she wants!

4.0 out of 5 stars My son loved it !, June 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Barney - Barney's Great Adventure (DVD)
I read where one person wrote the movie wasn't for children under four...I totally disagree. My 20 month old son loved it. He watched the entire movie ( more than once) and laughed and danced along with it. I know he can't fully understand everything that went on, but it certainly got his attention. He does watch Barney, Sesame Street and other TV shows, but this is the first MOVIE he sat through and watched till the end. So do not deprive your child, regardless of age, of watching the movie. Afterall every child is different and you won't know if yours will like it until you let them watch it !

4.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe it, a GOOD Barney movie!, May 17, 2000

Of all the Barney movies I've seen, this is the only one I actually enjoyed watching. My 4 year old loved it, my 8 year old liked it. If you have a Barney lover in your family, and you would like to enjoy a movie together, I recommend "Barney's Great Adventure".

Those who would normally expect the quantum leap in magic the big screen makes possible will be very disappointed. After putting out $$ apiece for me and the kids, we walked out of the theater after only one hour and ten minutes feeling ripped off. Of course, you'd think that buying the video is something else altogether: but, alas, with this movie you don't even get what you pay for at the reduced cost-experience of video purchasing. Very few new songs. A pitifully linear story line goes nowhere and is so empty-ended that it make this an INSTANTLY forgettable story for even the youngest of children. True, it's harmless, but it's nothing else, either. As an adult who sees the value of Barney (simplistic morality and civility lessons for children), the full-length possibilities could have explored the origin of Barney, perhaps even a new family member. or perhaps really get into a deeper concept for children. But we see nothing new here. In fact, we see no concepts here. There is no advantage taken in character interest--even Baby Bopp is a marginal appearance with the ol' Blankie schtick.

It's as if the day before production began the director lost the script, the author was out of town, and the studio had to produce something from scratch in one day.

Kids should see Barney for free on PBS is my recommendation. Don't buy this video for them. Don't reward a studio or children's product that got by on the bare minimum! Instead of rewarding children for their interest in this character, they are taken advantage of by a company that just wanted a few more millions. A real shame. Now you know. END

5.0 out of 5 stars Annie loves it!, March 10, 2006
No, this movie is not interesting to adults, but my two year old granddaughter loves it. It is the only full length movie that she will watch until the end. Since she usually only watches TV right before bedtime, it takes her at least a week to watch the whole movie, but she will always insist on continuing to watch the movie right where she left off the night before. She responds to the movie with laughter and giving the actors advice on where to find the egg. The farm and the grandparents remind me of when I was little and spent my summers at my grandparents' farm in east Texas. Since my husband and I don't live on a farm, this is probably the closest that Annie will ever come to enjoying the summer farm experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish there was another movie like this one!, July 18, 2005
This is a great movie for toddlers!! My daughter is now 2 1/2 and has loved this movie since she was 18 months. There is lot's of singing, dancing and make-believe in the film, all of which keep her clapping, dancing and laughing. It actually entertains her for the entire 90 minutes! I wish Barney had another movie so we wouldn't always have to see the same storyline, but luckily my daughter hasn't bored of it, yet. Other children's movies seem to not hold her attention, probably because the storyline is for slightly older children (3+). The singing and dancing in this movie are key!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mychal's Mom, April 1, 2003

I took my son to see this movie when he was 5 years old. He is now 10 and still loves to watch this movie. I'm not a Barney fan, but he and especially this movie is a big hit at my home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clean and exciting for toddlers, January 3, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Barney - Barney's Great Adventure (DVD)
This is one of the few (if not the only) movie on the market for very young kids that has no evil plot or violence. It is a very clean adventure.

It is also very interesting for kids. In the movie, they go to the circus, fly among hot air balloons, visit animals on a farm, go to a parade, and dance in a restaurant. It is truly a perfect movie for 6 and under. It also gently pushes themes of imagination, determination, and friendship.

2.0 out of 5 stars Better acting than show, but drags, January 18, 2002

"accroya" (Las Vegas, NV United States) - See all my reviews
I write this review on behalf of my kids who have watched their fair share of Barney... Even though I was relieved to see realistic child actors, my kids (3-year-old twins) just don't like this very much. I think the format is a bit too long for the younger viewers. Perhaps older kids will like it, but in my case it was basically a waste of money...
