Amazing Inventions by an American Original,
By
This review is from: Barney Childs (Audio CD)
Barney Childs was one of the seminal forces in the American Experimentalist tradition, chiefly during the 1960's and '70's, though his influence continues to this day by those lucky enough to know of him and his creations. Most of the works on this collection are for various woodwinds, and all are admirably performed by the great musician and educator, Phillip Rehfeldt. Some are sonically complex, such as the "Take 5" from 1962, for flute with prerecorded clarinet, bass clarinet, sax and bassoon. Some are for solo instrument, some for soloist with electronics; there is an excellent quartet for bassoons, quite richly textured, and the 1967 "The Golden Bubble" features the rarely-heard E-flat contrabass sarrusophone, with percussion accompaniment by Ron George. A single work for reader, "Variation on Night River Music",from 1969 (read by Marco Schindelmann) rounds out this wonderful collection from the always dependable New World Records. philip krumm san antonio
