3.0 out of 5 stars They hadn't gotten the Barney formula down yet, October 17, 2001
By
Lee Amon (Fremont, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This is one of the very early Barney videos with the original Backyard gang, Michael, Amy, Tina, Lucy, etc.

They introduce Derrick in this episode, who has just moved into the neighborhood and doesn't know if Santa has his address. So Barney takes the kids up to the north pole, where they meet Mrs. Clause and confirm that Derrick is on the list.

Overall the songs are OK, but if you are used to the current Barney, you will find a few things jarring. For example, Barney's eyes are wide open, rather than sleepy half shut as they are now. This gives him a somewhat manic and (IMO) scary look - Note - my 3 year old son does not find him scary, in fact he loves this video. Oh well. Barney is a slightly different shade of purple, and in one song the kids do a "disco-y" hip thrust that rather surprised us.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Barney: Waiting for Santa [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I loved this video and I've had it since I was 4. In this episode, Barney, Michael, Amy, Adam, Luci and Tina bring their new friend Derek to the North Pole. Derek is afraid he won't be on Santa's list because he just moved into the neighborhood. I don't know why a viewer wrote a review called Where's The Barf Bag because this is one of the greatest videos I've ever seen, although I do agree that I like Barney Goes to School.

2.0 out of 5 stars I'm still scarred of this movie!, March 12, 2006
A Kid's Review
Let me start out by saying I'm 13 years old and saw this video when I was two. This video has the old "Backyard Gang." from before the t.V. show. After the theme song, (Which has different words from the T.V. show) Mike, Amy, Lucy and Tina are all sleeping by the stairs at Mikes house waiting for Santa Claus because it's Christmas Eve. But instead of Santa Barney comes down the chimney. (Not in his doll form but his big talking form.) On the way down Barney gets stuck and all the kids have to pull him out by his feet. When Barney emerges from the chimney, he has smoke all around him. When Barney gets cleaned up the kids sing a song and tell Barney about a kid named Derek, who just moved in and does not know if Santa has his address. So then Barney and the kids say a magic chant (Something that does not happen in the T.V. show) to bring Derek to Mikes house. After they sing another song Barney says the chant again to go to the North Pole and tell Mrs. Claus Derek's address. After that they say the chant again to go back home and wait for Santa.

This movie scarred the heck out of me, because when Barney got stuck in the chimney he started screaming and all you could see are his feet. Another reason I was scarried was because the "Backyard Gang" version of Barney has a darker color of purple and a lower voice. Another diiference in Barney's apperance in this video compared to the T.V. shoe is that that his eyes are wide open not sleepy half shut like they usualy are. Also I know this is a Christmas video of Barney, but it's not educational. It does not have the "Barney says" where Barney talks about what you learned, which was a real let-down for my parents.
My advise is, do not buy this video for your children if they are used to the current Barney on T.V.
