Review of Graham Hughes 'Barns of rural Britain', December 15, 1999

This review is from: Barns of Rural Britain (Paperback)
This book is a brief over view of barns of rural Britain. It begins with chapters on the history of the barns and the agricultural revoloution. It discusses how they have fallen in and out of use and why they should be preserved as part of British social history. It does not fall into the study of architectual analysis but shows how vernacular architecture is different in different areas of Britain. It also gives many prime examples and where they may be found. The book is filled with many good quality black and white photos of the wide ranging barns from graneries to threshing and tithe barns. In a study area which has been little discussed in literature Hughes book gives a good basis for further study.
