PreS. A bad case of flu turns the farm animals' harmonies into a cacophony of wheezes and sneezes. A playful read-aloud with a square-dance cadence and deeply saturated, warm-and-fuzzy colors.

Ages 3^-5. Greene's funny, rhyming text, with the barest hint of "Old MacDonald," will have kids vocalizing right along in no time. A bevy of barnyard beasts, all "singing their usual notes, in their usual voices, in their usual throats," come down with barnyard flu, which interrupts their chorus. Suddenly, there's "No buzz. No mew. No cock-a-doodle-doo." A batch of the farmer's savory soup is what finally saves the day. Bender uses thick, dark outlines bled into patches of bright color to give a soft-edged look to his farmyard backdrops and animal residents. The critters will still be easy for children to identify, however, and the book offers plenty of opportunity for practicing the sounds the animals make. Great for small groups and lap sharing, too.
