5.0 out of 5 stars TZIGANI!, July 31, 2000

Ian Andolina (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is truly intoxicating and heady music. If you imagine a brass band (usually synonomous with 'military' music), shaken hard, a rhythm section as tight as can be, playing what can only be equated to a gypsy version of speed metal - you still don't come anywhere close to describing how breathtaking this group plays. I saw them live 3 months ago in london, and the nearest description i can give is like being in a east european rhythmic earthquake. This band plays on the edge of the believable and is probably what the devil listens to when throwing a party. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED...

5.0 out of 5 stars exuberant and mesmerizing musica tiganeasca, May 3, 2000
By
Uplifting, tight and captivating rom music, played with anincredible speed in an upbeat tempo. The rythm, propelled by drivingpercussions, tight tuba and woven together with blazing, butoccasionally dreamy, clarinet, trumpet and saxophone solos, compells dance movement. This exuberant melange of various Balkan and Turkish styles has also elements of klezmer in it. A great follow-up to Fanfare Ciocarlia's first CD "Radio Pascani". Buy it and play it loud and often!

I now have both CD's by Fanfare Ciocarlia...and I find that if you want "bouncy" upbeat brass band music in an Eastern European manner, thisx is the type of music to have. The music is addicting and once started, your feet will not stay still! There is a problem...trying to find these CD's!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Party Album!, May 2, 2000
By A Customer
It is almost impossible to believe that people can play as fast and as tight as Fanfare Ciocarlia. These twelve guys can play like no one else I've ever heard. The music is not only fast, but beautiful and uplifting. This is definitly one of the best albums of 2000!

5.0 out of 5 stars How do they do that?, March 8, 2009
This review is from: Baro Biao: World Wide Wedding (Audio CD)
Until that great documentary of 1993, Latcho Drom, most of us, when the term "gypsy" was uttered, would think of some restaurant violinst playing Central European rhapsodies, a Spanish flamenco guitarist, or Django Rhinehardt of jazz fame. An echo of that film came with the recent world touring groups of Gypsy Caravan. A highlight for me was my introduction to Fanfare Ciocarlia, a Romanian brass band that performs sibra, hora, ruseaca, manea dances and other tunes, fingering their instruments at lightning speed. As complex as traditional New Orlean jazz band but at warp speed, this group makes you want to dance once you get passed being frozen with awe of their brilliance. This early one-hour recording (1999) keeps to their roots with tune selection. Once common, such brass bands are now rare among the villages, but Fanare Ciocarlia keeps the tradition alive. Play this album with friends and see their surprise.
