Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Hubbard, a prolific writer of pulp fiction, excelled at westerns. This story, from the September 1936 issue of All Western Magazine, tells the tale of Lance Gordon, who, after murdering the man who killed his father, is now wanted by the law. Rescued from certain capture by the mysterious Tyler, Lance joins forces with him to bring down a ruthless cattle rustler. Slick and speedy, the story touches on a favorite Hubbard theme—the blurring of the line between good and evil, right and wrong—and delivers plenty of two-fisted action. Reign of the Gila Monster (first published in Western Aces, September 1937), also included here, is a very entertaining story about a couple of guys who decide to rescue a town from its self-appointed marshal. It’s not an out-and-out comedy, but it is decidedly offbeat, with a pair of protagonists who are definitely not in the typical Hubbard hero mold. --David Pitt

Review

If proof were needed that L. Ron Hubbard could handle the Western with the flare of a Louis LAmour or Zane Grey, this book is it. --True West Magazine

5.0 out of 5 stars Wild and wooly western pulp action!, July 16, 2011
By
This review is from: The Baron of Coyote River (Stories from the Golden Age) (Paperback)
This is one of my favorites from L. Ron Hubbard. A great many of the golden age reprints from Galaxy Press are westerns and Hubbard was so skilled at creating likeable characters and fast action packed plots that I was turning the pages eagerly and savoring the adventure. If you haven't read one of the Galaxy Press golden Age reprints this will be a good place to start. It's wild and wooly fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Wild West!, April 18, 2011
By
This review is from: The Baron of Coyote River (Stories from the Golden Age) (Paperback)
"Cattle rustlers" & "Gunslingers" -- terms that mark the old West. Done in the style of the classic Louis L'Amour. While the West was being 'settled', justice was as much in the hands of the ranch owners as the Sherrif's. Hubbard captures the mind-set of the these earlier settlers, who frankly we owe a lot. He paints the landscapes and puts you into the minds of the characters like few authors have been able to do. When you meet this mysterious Baron of the Coyote River -- you will not forget him.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Johnny Depp type and a Richard Kiel type together in ONE Audiobook !!!, February 16, 2010
Starring the voices of: Martin Kove, Bruce Boxleitner and Jim Meskimen.
BARON is about a wronged gunslinger and his unlikely compadre who fight against illegal cow stealing,Corrupt cavalry and mistaken identity.
This sounds like a real time reading of an old dime novel that was about Custer,Jesse James or some other gunslinger of the day.
The backup tale on this audiobook is REIGN of the GILA MONSTER,Although shorter this tale held my interest perhaps more and its the one that had ALL THE STARS.
I heard the image of RICHARD'Jaws'KIEL, as the character in story ...And Richard was no where near this audio tale,But,It could have been him...Except L.Ron wrote this in the'40s and Richard would have been a kid and nowhere near his famous size of today.
Good script and voices and amusing premise to plot.
