When did they fall in love?, October 31, 2011
Summary: Lady Olivia Fullerton is 18 years old and recently emerged from the schoolroom. She has three older brothers, and her parents are deceased. She lives in the family home and acts as hostess for oldest brother, who has inherited the title. All of her brothers are wild, debauched wastrels who show very little concern for her welfare. Her oldest brother holds a house party that involves female and male guests, including Sir Noah Lawrence. Olivia had met Sir Noah a few years prior and holds him in distaste b/c of his wild, improper ways and destructive influence of her brothers. During the house party, Sir Noah turns to Olivia (being the hostess) for help with a truly shocking overnight emergency. Trying to prevent servants' gossip, Olivia helps him without a chaperone, but this unfairly makes her the subject of vicious gossip and scandal. Her brothers do not stand by her in the firestorm of negativity and loss of her reputation. She is forced to wed Sir Noah (about halfway through the book). The book continues from there to follow the first nine months or so of their marriage.
The book built up very nicely to the marriage. It was clear that marriage was Olivia's only choice, and Sir Noah was trying to do the honorable thing by offering for her. She relinquishes her dreams of a love match and goes into this necessary marriage with reluctance. Sir Noah has a certain charm, however, and this book IS a romance, so I had high hopes for seeing their relationship unfold and develop after the wedding.
Those hopes were dashed, sadly, and things went downhill for me after they got married. Here's why:
I never got to see the relationship develop, which really disappointed me. Over the nine months after the wedding, Olivia and Noah *might* have been together for 30 days - and not 30 continuous days either! He always had to run off to London or elsewhere for the sake of a boring, detracting and implausible subplot that did not involve the romance. I mostly skipped that. Noah almost never wrote to Olivia and didn't give her his direction when he did, so she could not write to him. By the end of the book, when had Olivia and Noah had the chance to really fall in love? They were rarely together and didn't know each other. Olivia spent most of the book with her in-laws or by herself.
Beyond this, I had a few other issues with the book. It had much stilted and awkward dialogue that dragged. There was plenty of telling, rather than showing. However, some showing could have been avoided. This book went beyond the bedroom door, and I really wish it wouldn't have. There was a literal sex ed lecture involved, and from there, things were so boring that I was embarrassed for the characters. I am not a fan of gratuitous or very explicit scenes, but this little bit of heat did not add to the story. I found myself skipping those pages.
Overall, I feel that this book was a missed opportunity.

He Gave Her His Name To Save Her From Scandal., March 19, 2005
But Now She Longed For His Love...
Lovely Olivia regarded Sir Noah Lawrence with more than a touch of suspicion. Not only had the rakish gentleman led her three bothersome brothers astray, but he had involved her in an escapade that threatened to leave her reputation in tatters. Now, to top it off, Sir Noah was trying to convince her that their betrothal was the only way to stem the rising tide of scandal. True, Olivia had often dreamt of the freedom marriage could bring, but she feared that close proximity to the imperious baronet would prove dangerous. For what good is freedom when you have lost your heart?
