Editorial Reviews

Hold onto your hats for a blizzard of virtuoso Vivaldi! Baroque ensemble REBEL with recorder soloist Matthias Maute give stylish, high octane readings of some of Vivaldi’s most beloved pieces. Included on this disc are the popular and raucous Concerto alla Rustica, the stunningly colorful Sonata on La Follia, and four of Vivaldi’s exuberant recorder concerti, played brilliantly by recorder soloist Mathias Maute. Known for his dazzling virtuosity and colorful expressivity, Matthias Maute is recognized as one of the foremost recorder players of his generation, and has earned an international reputation for his formidable talents as a traverso player as well as a composer. Mr. Maute was awarded first prize in the prestigious Musica Antiqua Competition in Bruges, Belgium. In addition to being a core member of REBEL, he is the Artistic Director of Ensemble Caprice and is a professor at McGill University in Montreal. Directed by Jörg-Michael Schwarz & Karen Marie Marmer, REBEL has been hailed by the New York Times as “Sophisticated and Beguiling” and praised by the Los Angeles Times for their “astonishingly vital music-making”. Based in New York City, REBEL (pronounced “Re-BEL”) has earned an impressive international reputation, with their highly expressive and provocative approach to the Baroque and Classical repertoire. REBEL is currently in residence at historic Trinity Church, Wall Street in New York City. Named after the innovative French Baroque composer Jean-Féry Rebel (1666-1747), REBEL was originally formed in The Netherlands in l99l. In the Fifth International Competition for Ensembles in Early Music, Utrecht 1991 (now the van Wassenaer Competition) REBEL was awarded first prize. Since then the ensemble has performed throughout the USA and has recorded for Dorian, Hännsler Classic, and Deutsche Harmonia Mundi.

Virtuoso solo recorders (soprano and alto, mostly) supported by other instruments. Music was originally written for permanent residents of a Catholic girls' orphanage in Italy, during the time period when Vivaldi was musical director there. Those girls must have been a dedicated bunch. They don't make orphans like they used to! Anyway, the music is amazing and the performances do it full justice. Two thumbs way up.

Format: Audio CD
This very well recorded disc from 2003 features the spectacular playing of Mattias Maute on recorders. This is playing of great imagination as well as of considerable skill and thus must be considered as one of the most desirable of such discs of Vivaldi's recorder concertos.

As with the companion disc of opus 10 concertos, collected together under the title of Venetian Dreams, this disc incorporates a few similar works not featuring any recorders. The extra works are a Sinfonia Al Santo Sepolero RV 169; a concerto, Alla Rustica RV151; and two trio sonatas, La Follia RV 63 and also RV 76.

Three recorders are used in the four recorder concertos, the alto, soprano and sopranino. These four do not constitute all the recorder concertos and six more can be found on the companion disc as mentioned above. That still leaves room for a further such disc.

All the music is played with imagination and skill by all the players including the ensemble members. Their style is distinctively imaginative as regards performance decisions while not going down the dramatic road favoured by a number of fine Italian period groups. As such they make an attractive proposition as an alternative pair of complementary discs rather than competitive. ones.

I would suggest that both of these discs deserve special consideration as potential purchases from anyone interested in recorder playing, Vivaldi's music or just superb Baroque music making.
