Based in New York City, REBEL (pronounced “Re-BEL”) has earned an impressive international reputation, with their highly expressive and provocative approach to the Baroque and Classical repertoire. REBEL is currently in residence at historic Trinity Church, Wall Street in New York City. Named after the innovative French Baroque composer Jean-Féry Rebel (1666-1747), REBEL was originally formed in The Netherlands in l99l. In the Fifth International Competition for Ensembles in Early Music, Utrecht 1991 (now the van Wassenaer Competition) REBEL was awarded first prize. Since then the ensemble has performed throughout the USA and has recorded for Dorian, Hännsler Classic, and Deutsche Harmonia Mundi.

Virtuoso solo recorders (soprano and alto, mostly) supported by other instruments. Music was originally written for permanent residents of a Catholic girls' orphanage in Italy, during the time period when Vivaldi was musical director there. Those girls must have been a dedicated bunch. They don't make orphans like they used to! Anyway, the music is amazing and the performances do it full justice. Two thumbs way up.
