4.0 out of 5 stars Solo lute performances are pleasing to the ear and satisfying to the soul, June 16, 2007
This review is from: The Baroque Lute (Audio CD)
Lutenist Andrew Maginley performs works by J. S. Bach (Cello Suite no. 1/BWV 1007), S. L Weiss (Sonata no. 36 in d minor), and Adam Falckenhagen (Sonata no. 5 in F Major). Through deft performances and copious liner notes, Maginley traces the development of German lute music in the late Baroque period.

Purists might question Maginley's adaptation of Bach's popular "Cello suite no. 1", but Maginley argues in his notes that Bach may have originally composed this suite on a "lautenwerk" (a lute/harpsichord hybrid).

Overall, Maginley's performances are elegant and eloquent, and are enhanced by crisp production values.

Pleasing to the ear and satisfying to the soul, "The Baroque Lute" is perfect for a rainy Saturday afternoon, or to calm one's frazzled nerves at the end of a long day.

4.0 out of 5 stars music for fine food & wine, January 9, 2008
This review is from: The Baroque Lute (Audio CD)
i heard a track on a classic fm radio station and sent the cd as a gift. my friend liked to listen to it during meals - although she said it made her a little sad. her mother said it made her think of vineyards & fine food & wine.
