This review is from: Baroque Recorder Concerti: Works by Vivaldi, Telemann, Graupner, Babell & Naudot - Hesperus (Audio CD)
This is a very nice selection of pieces hightlighting Scott Reiss (founder & artistic director of Hesperus & founding member/co-director of the Folger Consort) on the recorder, backed up by Dana Maiben/Tina Chancey on violins, Brent Wissick on Cello, Robert Eisenstein on violone, & Peter Marshall on harpsichord. Thus, it has some resemblance to contemporary chamber music CDs such as those by Ton Koopman (B000005EBS) & The Chandos Baroque Players (B0000002ZIV). The CD includes a booklet describing the pieces & their composers. I enjoyed it (esp. Telemann--I'm a big fan) though I didn't like the Vivaldi pieces as much (though I like Vivaldi a lot too). It was very interesting to hear the recorder as the centerpiece & it was mellow yet lively in its presentation. The backup could, however, been a bit better so I'm giving it 4 stars. It's a good, & different "view" of baroque IMHO & worthy of consideration & enjoyment.
