This review is from: Baroque Recorder Concerti (Audio CD)
Michala Petri is the recorder player that many early-music people love to hate. Although her technical skills are amazing, she "refuses to listen to the voice of early music", she plays on relatively cheap and simple recorders, doesn't play with enough "feeling" for the music, doesn't really know how to make a beautiful ornamentation (especially for slow movements) and more.
Well, as an early music fan I have to agree, at least partially. Some of her CDs are something between boring and what looks like misunderstanding of the music. Still, I keep buying almost every CD she's doing. Why? Because in most cases it's just beautiful... Isn't it enough? This CD is one of the "good ones". We can hear some very good technical skills, and also clean and relaxed playing and good musicality. So, although I would prefer some more enthusiasm in some of the faster parts, and some beautiful ornamentations in the slower parts, I still enjoyed it enough to give 5 starts, or actually 4 1/2... Notice that this CD also appears as part of a 2-CD set: Recorder Concerti by Marcello, Vivaldi, Telemann, Naudot, Sammartini, and Handel [CD, Classical]. |
