5.0 out of 5 stars Passionate, Delightful Recordings of Baroque Recorder Standards, October 14, 2006

This review is from: Baroque Recorder Concertos: Pamela Thorby & Sonnerie (SACD) (Audio CD)
In her second solo album, Pamela Thorby of the Palladian Ensemble provides a delightful, spirited performance of what have become classics of the baroque recorder canon (three concertos by Vivaldi, one suite of Telemann, and one by Giuseppe Sammartini), with accompaniment and continuo by the popular early music group Sonnerie.

Three of the five pieces on this recording are by Antonio Vivaldi. Based on recent scholarly interpretations of cryptic notations by the composer on one of the manuscripts, two of Vivaldi's three "flautino" concerti have been interpreted as transposed down a fourth for soprano recorder, with the third (RV 444)still played on the sopranino recorder. Here, Thorby follows this latest musicological scholarship by playing one "flautino" concerto (RV 443) on the soprano recorder and RV 444 on the sopranino. Vivaldi's C minor concerto (RV 441) is a brilliant reworking of his own violin concerto.

The recorder has a reputation as a simple instrument, but the music is as technically difficult as anything in the baroque. Thorby is a true virtuoso, and this recording is a must-have for baroque and early music enthusiasts.
