The beautiful geometric forms, sensual colours, surreal abstract landscapes of Barragan's work fuse together elements of Mexican vernacular architecture, the International Style and pre-industrial materials. Artfully combining traditional styles and local colours with the controlled use of pools and the subtropical landscape of Mexico, Barragan has forged together an architecture at once unique and instantly recognizable. His achievements were brought to international attention with an exhibition of his work at New York's Museum of Modern Art in 1976 and in 1980 he received the coveted Pritzker Prize and the Premio America in 1987. This book presents Barragan's entire oevre - more than 100 buildings and projects dating from 1927 to 1981. Contributions come from Alvaro Siza, Antonio Toca Ferdandez, Jose Maria Buendia Julbez and Antonio Fernandez Alba.

I extolled the first edition of this definitive, splendidly illustrated survey when it appeared in 1996, and urge you to add it to your shelves if you haven't already. Luis Barragan (1902-88) was a master of earthy yet sophisticated buildings that had nothing to do with style and look better with every year that passes. This revised edition is little changed, but for an update of the bibliography and a perceptive essay by Antonio Ruiz Barbarin, from which I learned that Barragan was an almost exact contemporary of Marcel Breuer, Lucio Costa, Arne Jacobsen, and Ivan Leonidov. For a book titled The Complete Works, this book visually falls short. Many of the pictures are smaller and in black and white - not providing enough photos to be a really valuable visual research tool.
