Book Description

September 25, 1998
Mexican architect Luis Barragán (1902-1988) is famous throughout the world for his charming treatment of colour and space, and he has been a focus of general interest for many years. His unique persona and his wonderful buildings, invite us to renew our acquaintance time and time again. In this monograph, Danièle Pauly, provides an overview of his life and his architectural oeuvre. Chronologically she delineates in detail the biography of Barragán, his Mexican roots, the Mediterranean influences, his Functionalist period, and finally the steps to maturity as a consummate architect. All Barragán's significant buildings are documented comprehensively and analysed in the light of his life. This is enhanced with attractive illustrations all of which reveal Barragán's masterly, almost magical touch with space and shadow, walls and colour. This publication celebrates Barragán's undeniably important contribution to world architecture with a distinct new clarity.

1.0 out of 5 stars The History of Luis Barragan, June 15, 2009
By

I am an architect. There may be some published architecture that needs a lot of verbage. Luis Barragan's work does not.

Barragan's architecture and its pure emotion can be explained/expresed with floor plans and color photographs.

Barragan's work is the most colorful work in modern architecture. This book does not make a reasonable attempt to depict that fact. There are not enough photographs contained here and less than 1/3 of them are in color.

If you are interested in Barragan's history and architectural development, then maybe this book is for you. If you are interested in a visual description of the essential vibrant works of Luis Barragan, this is not that book.

4.0 out of 5 stars More than pictures...., January 19, 2011
I am also an architect, and I completely agree with another review that states that this book is about Barragan's history and development, Although I have to say that architecture, while being mostly a visual art, also requires to have conceptual depth, sometimes this cannot be captured only by photographs. So I agree that this book is not the best one if you want to look at the "pretty picture"s to appreciate his architecture, however, its value should not be reduced because of that, and as a scholar this book helped quite a lot with my masters thesis on architecture and cultural identity, and coming from a similar background as barragan, i found this book quite appealing. Bottom line: for research and deeper understanding of barragan=good, coffee table book= not so good.
