Premium Boogie,
By Rex Roy (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Barrel House Boogie Piano (Audio CD)
Boogie is like fuel to me...I've got to have it to live. After cutting my teeth Claud Bolling and other great piano players, Nole stands out as a modern star. Unlike the re-released recordings from the 20s, 30s, 40s and even 50s, the quality of the recording is excellent-all the better to hear Nole's handywork. Not only is he exceptional, but each cut is a little different...some a bit funkier, some with gospel roots, etc. Some cuts feature artists on drums, bass, guitar and juice harp, but these players never overpower the black-and-whites. Fantastic addition to any boogie collection...my current new favorite (sorry Mr. B from Ann Arbor... you've been displaced).

You cannot be in a bad mood while listening to good boogie piano, just like its hard to be in a bad mood while wearing a colorful Hawaiian shirt. Chris Nole has created a masterpiece of good boogie, which is amazing because few artists (beyond Johnnie Johnson) are making current boogie piano music. This CD is original, well performed, professionally mixed, and destined to become a classic in this fabulous genre of music.
