Economic crisis was just a cover-up for a meticulously planned world division. By 2032, the world was unrecognizable: three types of countries were established according to their level of education, economy, technological achievements, capabilities, and innovations. Names of the countries were replaced by corresponding numbers--first ten were rich, eleven to thirty advanced, and the rest were poor.


Twenty-seven year old Stella lived in Country 189 that was proclaimed as a country of lazy, stupid, and arrogant people. Not being any of that, and in the midst of raging unemployment and poverty, she saw her chance to survive by working on a conveyor belt for her country's new owner--the Global REN Company. Unfortunately, her fellow countrymen were true examples of her country's status, so when they found out that androids were top executives in Global REN, all hell broke loose, slowly paving the way for a world war. .


A decision to help the CEO, Chris Nicholson, when no-one would, gave her an opportunity to work as his assistant, and to experience the world on the other side of the barrier--the world she would have never seen as the poor country citizen. Emotionally and in business, their lives entangled, taking them in a completely unexpected direction. .


Stella found love and happiness. Chris was everything she ever wanted in a man, and he loved her dearly. But life sometimes plays morbid games...What was supposed to be a fairy-tale ending, now was a nightmare. .


The war took her everything, especially a reason to live. Coping with grief and anger, barely staying alive, life once again plays a morbid game. .


To save her brother, she is forced to accept help from an enemy--arrogant and overconfident James from Country 90. .


But life has one more game to play with Stella. This time it may not be so cruel....


Placed in a dystopian hell, with constant suspense, eased by tender love, and embittered by terrible losses; this book will take you on a journey of human barriers. .

About the Author

As an urban child, Barbara's getaway from the noise and fast paced city was escaping into the world of books. She lived the lives of characters and subsequently played with alternative scenarios in her own imagination. She created her own plots, added her own role, and changed the world. When she grew up, she realized just how little a person can change in the society, but the habit of alternative scenarios remained. In her own words, Barbara describes her writing as:

This story had me going from happy to sad to happy quite a few times. Stella is a young female living with her parent in a country that doesn't care very much about them. She is hardworking and educated with a good heart. Even though her situation is depressing she still has morals and Ethics. She is a strong young female that is thrown in so many heartbreaking situations. Yet they can not break her she grows into a strong adult and she gets a second chance for love.

I was close to tears, my heart was jumping for joy, I was sadden....this story had me on a roller coaster with all the feelings I went though. I loved it. I like stories that have my heart pumping and my emotions going. So well described that I can see the county where she lived the county where she got to visit with Chris and then with James and Mark. I can see the ghetto and those in the rich countries.

I loved Chris; he was so thoughtful, rich and cute. I wish it could have been a little different for him in the story. I am glad that Stella got to meet him but was surprised the story took on their relationship. Didn't see that coming!

I highlighted a lot in this story, something I normal do not do, a lot of the passages jumped out at me. Such as "They cost us our jobs! They took all important jobs in the country, and look where we are now" & "Men volunteered to go to war, proud to be able to defend their county, and soon after, the country drafted all the rest" it sounds so close to home with the immigration issue and the war overseas.

I truly enjoyed this story very much it's a keeper. Fast past with a lot of action and romance. Thanks to the author for providing me with a e-copy of the stoy for an honest review.

This dystopian romance is set in the year 2032. The countries have been categorized and renamed based on their economical health. Country 1 is the richest. Country 200 is the poorest. Stella lives in Country 189 which is destitute and the residents have been assumed to be lazy and slovenly. No one is willing to admit that the countries are in such a state because of dishonest and corrupt political leaders and blame the workers instead.

I think what I found most disturbing about this collapsed world that Rayne has created is that it is a mere 20 years into the future. This scenario is much scarier than stories where the world falls apart long beyond the range of my life span. The author is portraying the idea that our planet could be headed to such a situation so quickly and the theory is lent credibility by the current economical imbalance present within our society.

Overall a good book, but there are grammar errors that are distracting. A good buy for those who enjoy dystopian romances.

Barriers of The New World

Stella Graham lives in a not too distant future that alternates between being a complete dystopia or a fantastical utopia depending on which country you happen to reside in. The countries in this future world have been numbered to essentially represent their wealth. Unfortunately Stella happens to live in country 189 which is very poor and corrupt. This economical and political background is what makes Stella's interactions with other characters so emotional. The situations she finds herself in are so believable and yet so obviously out of her control that you can not help but find yourself sympathizing with her as she bravely faces the world even as everyday the country she lives in seems to be becoming worse by the minute.

Barriers of the New World delves into some very interesting topics, one of the most interesting, in my opinion, is one that is dealt with towards the beginning of the story where the author attempts to illustrate humans' reaction to finding out that there are androids among them, The argument is very involving because not all of the characters share the same point of view, with Stella courageously standing against her other friends' and putting herself in danger while defending the androids.

The story also has a very human and relatable storyline that is so much more than your run of the mill love story. As the story progresses Stella's love life changes dramatically and as she deals with the immense changes happening in her country she must also deal with the inner turmoil of her love life which leads to some very interesting character development for Stella.

Stella is a very engaging and three-dimensional character who grows before your very eyes as you turn each page.... I found myself at the last page in no time and was very sad to see the characters go.

For those reading this who are wondering why I am not giving the book five stars it is simply down to some grammatical errors and awkward sentence structures that, as another reviewer previously said, were quiet distracting. Read more ›

Some fascinating ideas have been explored here, with excellent results. The age-old themes of rich versus poor, privileged versus oppressed and love that transcends boundaries are always interesting ones that provoke an emotional reaction (often a tearful one!). There are certainly tragic elements to the story.

The characters are very warm, relatable and engaging (not the bad guys of course - they are ruthless and unscrupulous, as they're supposed to be!). There are some major plot twists along the way that keep you guessing, one particularly comes as a surprise and gives you one of those "wow" moments, which I always enjoy. The main character Stella struggles with certain disastrous personal events in her life, as well as some positive and unexpected ones. We follow her personal journey throughout the story.

This is a very intriguing and engaging story, and if you give it a go you won't be disappointed! It is intelligently-written, extremely creative and well-constructed and really draws you in and keeps your attention for the entirety of the story. Clearly, a lot of thought and love has gone into this story. It is essentially dystopian but has many different overlapping-genre elements, such as sci-fi, romance, perhaps even thriller etc. (We can only hope that real life does not deteriorate to this sad state of affairs in future, as described in the book!).

It has a happy ending, which is my favorite kind! It is also a satisfying, decent length (like a "real" book should be!). A truly high-quality read. I highly recommend this for people looking for a "meaty", all-absorbing read that they can really become involved in and sink their teeth into.

Freedom comes with wisdom, intrinsically--they are inseparable--and no society wants people to be free.
