Queenefertitti Loves Levy,
By Queenefertitti (Arlington, TX) - See all my reviews

This is one of my favorite CD's! I've owned it for several years and although it is remixed, don't listen to what anyone says. This man is UNDERRATED! He is a genius and you will never find a better dance CD. It's so hard to find CD's that are worth your money and this one is! Every track is good and not just 2 or 3.

Beware,

Too excited at finding a CD with 'Murderer' on it (can't find it anywhere), I unfortunately didn't spot that this is a Sly and Robbie mix of Barrington Levy's originals. Desperately disappointing. The only thing murdered are Barrington Levy's songs. Don't make the same mistake!

This was Barrington Levy's major label debut. I picked this up when it first came out expecting about half pop-reggae and half straight dancehall and this is about what I got. Truth is the popish tunes (Teacher, Survival, Nothings's Changed) are still strong compared to some other reggae artist's attempts at crossover from the same period. As for the remakes (not actual remixes) of his older material, Murderer is a nice reworking of the original, not better, but still listenable, and Rakim dosen't dissapoint. Strange is just a good as the original. The real gems on this album are new tracks. "Vice Versa Love" has some of the best lyrics Barrington ever wrote and actually gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it. But the real standout is the stunning "Be Strong". Mixing good old hardcore dancehall drums with live piano and guitar, this Latin inspired track is one of the best songs to come from Levy in his career as well as a high point for Sly & Robbie in the 90's. The fact that this song wasn't a worldwide smash is just a shame. 3 1/2 stars for this album.

A horrible mangling of the true Barrington.,

I saw this CD and picked up by looking at the tracklisting alone..I thought it had so many Barrington Levy classic song's I've wanted to get ahold of for quite a while: "Murderer", "Under Mi Sensi", "Survival", etc..needless to say, I failed to see that this CD came out in 1993, and had additional production by Sly and Robbie. (If I'd seen that, I wouldn't have bought it)..Basically this CD is chock full of ... dancehall beats and remixes, and Barrington's beautiful voice and his blue mountain yodel style vocals are just mangled in these horrible beats (very very few rocksteady riddims are apparent). The only good songs on the album (and the only songs I will listen to) is the "Under Mi Sensi" re-work, which is actually quite a dope remix, and really works, and "Go There", which I hadn't heard before, but is actually a great love song, in a cheesy kind of way. If you're looking for a great Barrington comp with many of his previous hits, check "Broader than Broadway: The Best Of", or for a true jamacain's compilation choice, check "The Barrington Levy Collection", which came out on Greensleeves a couple years ago..

This CD shows what the Barrington Levy style of reggae is all about. No holdin Back. When I put on Barrington , the smoothness of the beats, the pure voice, and the trueness of the lyrics blew me away.Barrington aint no joke. This CD represents the true reggae roots!
