Book Description

September 1, 2010 0764197835 978-0764197833 Flc Crds
Young men and women who enter any branch of the United States Armed Forces (as well as current service members who want to raise their scores) must take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), which determines their qualifications for military service and aptitudes for specialized training. This set of flash cards prepares aspiring recruits with questions that cover all 9 ASVAB subtests, including word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, general science, electronics, shop and automotive information, mechanical comprehension, mathematics knowledge, and mentally assembling rotated objects. Questions are on the front and answers are on the reverse side of each flash card. The cards, which measure 4 1/2" x 2 3/4", each have a punch hole in one corner that accommodates an enclosed metal key-ring-style card holder. The ring allows users to arrange the cards in any sequence that suits their study needs. This set of 400 cards can be used alone or in tandem with Barron's ASVAB test preparation manual.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well designed, but not exactly flashcards October 21, 2010
    By D. J.
    Format:Cards|Verified Purchase
These are well designed flashcards, and they have nice packaging but be warned: aside from the vocabulary flashcards, the rest are just practice test questions with multiple choices on the bottom from the book.

For the math "flashcards", you have to have another sheet of paper so you can answer the problems. It's not a flashcard when you have to work out of problem on a piece of paper. It's a flashcard. Look at it, answer it, and go onto the next one. Instead of the math questions the flashcards had, it should of had vague questions about what you do when you come across a certain problem or have flashcards helping with conversions between metric and customary.

The science flashcards are better, they still ask you questions that might be on the test but it still bothered me that it was just practice questions (I saw some of them in the textbook's practice tests). The electricity, auto, and shop flashcards are also in this same format. They aren't bad flashcards, they will still help me learn the material, but its just odd seeing multiple choice answers below the question as if I was taking a test instead of practicing with flashcards.

The vocab flashcards are definitely worth the price, since they are actual flashcards. Look at the word, say the answer, and go onto the next one. Flashy.

I'm still kind of disappointed though, I was hoping that the math flashcards would help me out with conversions because I have a hard time knowing how many grams are in one kilogram, for example. I'll have to make my own flashcards for that, but at least I have plenty of practice questions.

But, if you know your math and don't really need the math flashcards other then to have more practice questions, go ahead and get these.

    4.0 out of 5 stars Here's What You'll Get June 1, 2011
    By Tyler
    Format:Cards|Verified Purchase
First off, I mostly agree with D.J.'s review. It is true that these "flash cards" are mostly multiple choice questions. He also says you need a pencil and paper do the math questions. Not necessarily. I was able to do all of them in my head, but math is my best subject, so maybe that's just me. Try to avoid using a calculator because they are prohibited on the actual test. The vocab questions were, in my opinion, the most helpful. I also have a set of SAT vocab flash cards, and I was surprised to discover that these are better. With every work, there is a definition (usually a short sentence), sentence using the word, list of synonyms (about 3), and list of antonyms (about 3).

In addition, here's what you'll get: 9 sections in 400 cards. Each card is labeled with its number, so you won't mix up order. Each set of cards is labeled by a shading in a unique spot on the top of the cards. The sets are:

    Cards 1-55 = General Science
Cards 56-105 = Arithmetic Reasoning & Mathematics Knowledge
Cards 106-255 = Word Knowledge (Vocab)
    Cards 256-270 = Paragraph Comprehension
    Cards 271-305 = Electronics Information
    Cards 306-330 = Automotive Information
    Cards 331-355 = Shop Information
    Cards 356-380 = Mechanical Information
    Cards 381-400 = Assembling Objects

I did find a number of errors, or maybe I'm just wrong. If you buy them, check these out and respond.
On Q17 science, I think answer should be 40 (not listed), but its 32 (D).
On Q55 science, there is a disharmony between the answer listed and the explanation to support it.
On Q57 math, answer should be 32 (D), but it's 31 (C). I calculated 31.4, but by the nature of the question, we need to round up.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's better this way trust me! December 30, 2012
    By DeLuca
    Format:Cards|Verified Purchase
I feel as though I am just memorizing the answers. I mean for a normal test that is good but the asvab is not a normal test. I know I am not going to see 1 question that is on these card on the asvab. If you did not know that, now you do not be surprise by it ether. you cant find the EXACT questions any were even if you do the military creates a new test every 2 months. The cards are just to help you understand the material better and maybe get 1 or 2 right you would of get wrong. It is worth it too! Because there is only 11 or 16 questions per category. So I read the question have 0 idea what most of them are the first time, flip the card over and you do that a few more time and that cards memorized. After I finished the whole deck I went back through picking out random cards and read it. Before I get halfway done reading, I know its D or whatever. You may be thing but that is good, but for some of them like math when your doing the work for a 3rd time you stop working as hard and cut corners because you know the answer already. Here is something about me I guess, I have taken the asvab before I was given a weekend (5 days) to study well cram because i picked a mos that had to be reserved(11x *opt40*). I took it did not get the score I needed, I got a (61 afqt) and (105 gt), I needed a (50 afqt) and a (107 gt) I was annoyed by this. I though about it for a wile and stuck with 11xray(infantry). I am retaking this test to improve my score so if I every get asked to volunteer for airborne and rasp(*opt 40*) I wont have to retake the test then, and possibly fail then. The cards are better then cramming random knowledge off the internet over a weekend trust me. Take 2 months and work with these card daily. If your a grammar/spelling nut sorry if I made you have a panic attack along the way.
