I teach GED preparation in Spanish and English, in the same classes, at a local community college. Barron's GED is available in English and Spanish. Although the translation is not always page by page, and some different literature is culturally wise, this still allows me to proceed with small groups or individuals during the classes and to present specific topics for 30 minutes or so of each 3-hour class. Students are also placed in another room to take timed practice tests, again in both languages. Using Barron's GED provides me and the students with sequence and continuity benefits. Also, Barron's responds when students notice errors and changes are made in subsequent editions. My students buy their own books, usually through Amazon.com. This is not a paid advertisement, although I will accept tips in the form of free books!

I used this book to study for my GED exam and needless to say it was the best purchase I could have made. It was very thorough with its lessons and taught exactly what you needed to know and more. When I got my results back from my tests I was surprised at how well I performed. This book prepared me to the point where the test seemed very easy. I finished early with all of the tests with time to go over every question again and sit in my seat for 20 minutes waiting until the next test was handed out. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has to study for their GED exam.

WHAT THIS BOOK HELPED ME ACCOMPLISH:
I wish I could've seen the look on my own face when I started certain parts of the GED test. This huge book had me so prepared that the test seemed like a breeze after studying it for about 2 months. Got my results back 2 weeks ago and I was in AT THE LEAST: the 86 percentile---and AT THE MOST the 99th percentile (the percentiles are compared to graduating high school seniors in the United States, So for example since I was in the 86th percentile on my worst subject, I did better than 86 percent of graduating high school seniors did in that particular subject) MY BACKGROUND: I will be honest in saying that I had only been out of high school for approximately 18 months when I took the test (as opposed to several years like many test takers), I was only 2 credits short of graduating(as opposed to 2-3 years short like many test takers), AND I have never been bad at taking state standardized tests to begin with. BUT even with all of these facts into consideration, I was a bit rusty with a few parts of a few subjects and this book helped me review things that I wouldn't have remembered on my own during the test otherwise. WHAT IT TAKES: I'm confident that anyone who puts as little as 30 minutes per day(for 2-3 months tops) into this book, takes studying seriously, reviews and re-reviews things that they aren't understanding right away, already have just a basic foundation in math and reading in general, and can write a basic middle school level essay will pass the tests. WHAT YOU'RE BUYING: The disc pretty much has everything on it that the book does. They have review questions after every subsection to make sure you understood and can do what the chapter went over. I can't think of a thing wrong with this book and although it will take you a few months to go through the entire thing if you need to do that, at just 20 dollars you get a lot for your money. MY PERSONAL ADVICE: *If you would like a more straightforward review in math, I would definitely recommend CliffsNotes Math Review for Standardized Tests (CliffsTestPrep) (Only arithmetic, some algebra, and basic geometry from the book are needed for the GED) *Most people worry the most about the essay. DO NOT SWEAT IT. Your spelling/grammar isn't the best? MINE ISN'T EITHER! The test coordinators that I had and it even states on the official GED website that as long as they can tell what you're saying, they DO NOT count off for spelling or minor grammar/punctuation. Just stay on topic and address the prompt and you will be fine. Expository prompt? Introduction, 3 reasons why, and a conclusion. As simple as that. It's elementary school stuff guys, so don't sweat it or try to use words that you don't know how to use in context. * Something that a teacher once told me in my early school years that I hold as the best advice ever when it comes to standardized tests (I've never failed one before in my life) YOUR FIRST ANSWER IS USUALLY THE CORRECT ONE! I'm not saying that you shouldn't read all of the possible answers, but I am saying that the answer that first pops up in your mind as correct the FIRST TIME, is USUALLY the correct one. SO don't go back 10x changing answers unless you have a good reason to, you notice an answer-changing detail that you missed before, or you just randomly guessed to begin with. ALSO I don't fully recommend this, but IF you were to find yourself with only a minute left and 10 questions left to answer, the BEST way to go about dealing with that is picking one number and bubbling straight down. DON'T Christmas tree. You have a better chance of getting more correct if you just bubble the same answer all the way down. I DO NOT recommend this unless you REALLY have to though. Practice in time management during testing is more orthodox and a smarter/more effective per-meditated option. * This one is only for Florida students that have been out of high school for no more than 2 years - If you passed the FCAT standardized tests in high school with flying colors (I mean Reading, Math, Writing, scores of 4 and higher), you definitely don't have to sweat about this test. It's sad to say but the FCAT is about twice as hard as my opinion as the GED tests were. And this is me saying this when I took the FCATs while being a fulltime high school student but yet took the GED after being out of school for a year and a half straight. I'm not saying that people in this position should not study for the GED or that you should not buy this book to review the subjects anyways, but I am saying that if you were an FCAT passer in high school, you will probably be pleasantly surprised at how easy the GED tests are to you. * To anyone thinking of taking the GED tests the first time or beyond- DO IT NOW, It's a fact that in 2014 they are putting out a NEW GED test that is HARDER, and 3-4x more expensive! Going to be all on computers, etc Best to do it now to get it over with before they make it much more difficult to get your diploma. Hope this review helped some people. Any questions about the book or the test, feel free to comment.

I am a GED teacher. I was looking for a cd that could be loaded on to my classroom computers that would give my students exposure to the realities of the GED test as to type of questions in each area and how questions are worded.
My students are enjoying the use of this item and I feel they are getting some good benefits from it. It is an inexpensive way for them to get some good practice in the GED areas. |
