Great Test Prep material -- new edition is so odd, November 4, 2009
This review is from: Barron's COOP/HSPT/TACHS (Paperback)
I work as an academic tutor, and one of the subjects I teach a lot is HSPT/ISEE test prep. We use this series for both tests. Great book, really top-notch. It has a chapter reviewing math, starting with integers and going through Algebra and Geometry. The child may have learned all the math fundamentals in school, but some of them are not current. This is a great review of fractions, decimals, percentages, Pythagorean Theorem, math vocabulary, forgotten equations.
The Reading Comp and Vocabulary chapters are equally solid. The material in all sections is presented in a straight-forward manner; answers and explanations are also included. There are two practice tests in back, along with practice material for the two other tests covered by the book (if you REALLY want to practice taking tests).
I have used other TP material, but I keep coming back to Barron's. It is the best.
OK -- 8/2010 -- There is a new edition just out. I used it today with a student, just the Verbal section so far. It was so very odd -- has been changed radically, so as to be obfuscating and not clear, with examples that were irrelevant to the task. I will look further, but check new edition carefully before you buy.

Pretty good book., November 12, 2011
This review is from: Barron's COOP/HSPT/TACHS (Paperback)
I got this book for my little brother to study for the TACHS test. It's pretty useful since it has extensive reviews of math, english, and reading in order to prep kids for the TACHS test. The only problem I found was that there was a fairly large number of errors made by the book on the answer sheets and explanations. Granted, the mistakes account for about 5% of the questions out of an entire book, it is very confusing for a young kid who is trying to learn. So, I would recommend this book since it is detailed and tests harder than the actual test, but, someone knowledgeable should supervise the studying in order to filter out the occasional mistake on Barron's part.
