4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Those Who Know Their Stuff, June 27, 2009

This review is from: Barron's AP United States History 2008 (Barron's How to Prepare for the Ap United States History Advanced Placement Examination) (Paperback)
This is exactly what I would look for in a review book for AP US. I feel that too many students are looking for "quick fixes" and "one-stop location for AP US History: the essay, the actual history, the multiple choice." Well, there is no shortcut to learning history, whether listening to lectures, reading Brinkley, taking notes from AMSCO. No one can force you to learn all that history in a week or two, especially not Barron's. Let's face it, if Barron's US History was like Barron's AP Chemistry, would anyone sit through it? I think I'd go back to Brinkley.

This review books concentrates on honing your essay and multiple choice skills, while giving you a brief overview of each important era. Moreover, the timeline in the appendix is really dandy when you're trying to remember the order events.

I RECOMMEND this book if you need to finetune your skills and need some extra practice. This is book is NOT RECOMMENDED for those of you who use this as a last ditch effort. Moreover, those with a weak will (heavy procrastinators!) should not buy this book. It is helpful to brainstorm the FRQ's with your friends on a rainy day. Write down what you brainstormed, and then the week or so before you take the test, look over the FRQs you guys did together. It'll help jog your memory.

There was a jarring typo on one page in a multiple choice about inventions. Otherwise, it was a great book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Get another book, October 24, 2008
This review is from: Barron's AP United States History 2008 (Barron's How to Prepare for the Ap United States History Advanced Placement Examination) (Paperback)
i take ap us history and i am having a hard time so i decided to buy a book to help me. when i first read this book i realize this book does not teach anything and instead it only tells you how to "crack the ap test(something you should already know how to do if you have taken a standardized test). this is a book consists of only questions, with no explanations except for the 2 practice tests.
but there are some good things about this too. unlike the princeton review books(which i highly recommend, got one for ap euro and i have an a instead of failing), this book has a chronological summary of events and a glossary which some if not most other review books do not have. and it really helps
i would only get/use this for reviewing before the ap exam. and yes, i am barely passing ap us so im planning to get the princeton review version soon.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Prep Book Ever, April 20, 2011
This review is from: Barron's AP United States History 2008 (Barron's How to Prepare for the Ap United States History Advanced Placement Examination) (Paperback)
This is a horrible prep book. For something as detailed as US History this book barely teaches or summarizes anything. It tells you how to write an essay, but I'm pretty sure for $16.99 any other prep book could do just the same. I got a 2 on the AP Exam thanks to following this book. I suggest getting Princeton Review, all my friends who used it got 4's and 5's on the exam.
