Good Praxis I prep, very bad Praxis II prep,

This review is from: Barron's PRAXIS (Paperback)
The preparation materials for the Praxis I was very extensive. It reviewed materials first then went into sample exercises after each concept as well as cumulative section one at the end. In fact, I found that this book's Praxis I sample test was much harder than the one offered on test day. If I could amend the stars and split the rating, I would give the Praxis I prep five stars - it's much better than any other test prep book out there and for half the price.
The Praxis II test preparation is why this book gets two stars. Please note, this review is just for the Praxis II: Elementary Education - Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (0011). I reviewed the materials from the PLT section as advised and after learning that material as well as mastering the sample test for test 0011, I felt very prepared. The answers and explanations were very thorough. However, the 0011 test I took on test day was VASTLY (read: completely) different from the one I took in the book. The material did not overlap at all and did not even touch upon the concepts that were offered on the test. I felt that this test was MUCH easier than the one offered on test day - that version was extremely difficult. Thanks, Barron's. At least I'll have a reason as to why I failed my Praxis II.

Great Praxis Prep -- Get the Book with the CD,

This review is from: Barron's PRAXIS (Paperback)
I don't post reviews but I am definitely going to post my positive review of this book which successfully got me through all my Praxis tests. This book is just the best Praxis book and I recommend it to everyone. The CD gives you a chance to practice the tests in the computer format, which is the way PPST, 011, and 014 tests are also offered.
This book is a great deal because there is more than enough review information, test strategies, and practice tests to pass the PPST, PLT, the (0011, 5011) test and the (0014, 5014) test. The practice tests were all realistic. The state passing scores for PLT and (0011/5011)tests are at or below the 25th percentile (at least 75% )pass, and many are below the 10th percentile (90% pass). The (0014/5014) test is a little harder but the passing scale scores are all much lower, usually near the 10th percentile (90% pass). That means the vast majority of test-takers pass the test. If you are among the small percent of people who don't pass the first time, try to figure out what you did to cause the problem and fix it for the retake. The few cases of first time non-passing scores I heard about had mainly to do with using correct test strategies. I was told that knowing 40% of the answers and eliminating incorrect answers as you guess the rest can get a passing score. Lower percentile passing scores have a lower standard. Please don't rely on this but it gives you an idea. The high likelihood that you will pass makes this single source book a winner.

Great Book for Praxis Preparation,

This book prepares you for a lot of Praxis tests and the 0011 and other test questions in the book are like the actual Praxis test. Besides what the the person with the long review had to say there is one more "secret" to passing the tests.
ETS puts out a booklet that shows the state passing scores for the 0011 and the 0014 tests. They are below the 25th percentile and can be as low as the 10th percentile. I think most people in the bottom 10 to 25 percent of test scores probably just don't know test taking strategies, or it was a bad day, or they didn't have a good college program. Finding about the how really difficult it was to get a passing score helped my preparation by concentrating on sample tests and saved my a lot of time. I hope it works for you.

Very Successful With This Book,
By Ella Rose (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Barron's PRAXIS (Paperback)
This book got me through five Praxis tests. I feel like a professional Praxis test-taker. This single source was the only book I needed to get excellent scores on each test, and I really owe this book a lot. I'm here to give it the support it deserves. I will say right away that the 0011 Elementary Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment practice test in this book was very much like the actual test I took.
If you are not familiar with the 0011 test it asks a specific number of multiple choice questions in each of five elementary school curriculum areas and in a sixth area of about general information. I just checked my book and it says the PLT review along with other sections of the book will help, and it will help, but it is not a complete review. The book goes on with pages of specific areas in each subject matter section of the 0011 test that will likely appear on the test. I focused on those. The questions usually do not concentrate on the actual subject matter, but on the curriculum, instruction and assessment for that subject matter. The feedback I got from others taking the test along with me is that the different versions of the test focus on different specific material. ETS admits that it's tests vary in difficulty. I think that the number correct needed for a passing scale score can vary by as much as 15 or 20 correct on this test. That's why you should hold your judgement about how well you did on the test until you receive the scale score. Someone who has recently been through a good elementary teacher education program with field work will generally do well on this test, once they see what the questions are like, as in this book. The people I know who had real difficulty with the test took it before that experience was complete, or just did not have a feel for teaching. Many of the answers are common sense for a person with a teacher preparation background. I am pleased to give this book my thanks, and I know of other who feel the same way. I liked the book with the CD because I took the PPST on the computer format and some of the elementary tests now available in the computer format as well. The computer test experience is quite different from the paper and pencil experience. I've written a lot because this book has been so important to me. I can say that my success using this book indicates that it is extremely useful and in my view the best choice for Praxis preparation.
