Customer Reviews

I started in January and went through the entire book and finished by the beginning of May.

I found this book to be an extremely helpful preparation for the AP World History exam and would recommend it to other students who need to take it next year.

The Barron's book provides a "Broad Trends" section for each unit that really helps give perspective to the big picture.

For AP World History, I had a weak teacher and a hard textbook, so
Barron's was really the only thing I had to get me ready for the exam.
It's longer and more detailed than other guides, and I know some
students don't like that. But I was glad to have the extras -- by the
time I got through this book, I knew I could handle anything on the
test, which I ended up blowing away. It might not be the best thing
for last-minute crammers, but I'd recommend it for anyone else.

Length: This book is too long to be reviewed in 1-2 weeks. While it is very helpful in helping you understand the main ideas of each civilization and time period etc., it's just too much to review from. I would recommend following the instructions in this book, and study it throughout the year, while reading the actual textbook. (This could perhaps replace a textbook.) Barron's chapter order is similar to that of my AP textbook (World Civilizations: The Global Experience, Combined Volume (6th Edition)), and can be really helpful for the times you're not feeling like reading the entire textbook chapter. But if you're looking for a book to cram on, I'd suggest Kaplan AP World History 2012 or Cracking the AP World History Exam, 2012 Edition (College Test Preparation) (I didn't purchase 5 Steps to a 5). Kaplan is very easy to read, and is the shortest. PR is slightly longer than Kaplan, and tries to make some funny analogies.

Practice tests: Was definitely more difficult than the 2012 AP exam's questions. The review questions at the end of the units were pretty helpful. My biggest criticism is that many of the test questions were straight-fact-based instead of being comparative.

If you have a lot of time on your hands with which to study, this book is the book for you! I used the Kaplan book as a complement to this one, and while the Kaplan book focuses solely on the main ideas, this book organizes everything in a manner that allows a process of thinking that will indubitably aid in the essay-writing portions of the AP World History Exam.

I just got my AP results back and I got a 5 on the 2013 AP World History Exam! I owe this to Barron's! I comparison shopped books at Barnes & Noble, then went on Amazon!

This book was the perfect style for me, I was taking an online class and it was not working out well for me. So in January, I bought Barron's and started studying from it. Be warned though, do not buy this book less than a month before the exam. Barron's is not a quick read, it can replace a textbook (for my purposes). I started in January and went through the entire book and finished by the beginning of May. Tip: Memorize the essay rubric and you will already be far ahead of the other students. As far as the book layout, there was a unit overview, around 3-6 chapters, then a unit quiz. The quiz consisted of 20 exam style multiple choice questions. Before each quiz, there were sample essays to try out based on the past unit.

Barron's provided great preparation for the AP Exam! In my opinion, it can replace a textbook easily! As far as the essays, I would recommend that you search for essay writing resources and worksheets (if self-studying). Barron's is more like a textbook than your conventional review book. I recommend Barron's without hesitation and I will be using Barron's for the rest of my AP Exams!

As an AP teacher it was so much easy to just purchase a set for my class than to have them running all over town paying 2 to 3 times as much.

I actually bought this on a recommendation from my history professor as a study guide for the MTEL (Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure). The MTEL study guides are useless but this is a decent refresher guide that covers pretty much everything as comprehensively as you can expect from a study guide. It is a good way to identify your weaknesses so you can go to a more in-depth source to get the details.

Bought this for my younger sister who's taking this class now in high school. Even though she has not taken the AP test this book and the flash cards (for this book) has helped her tons for the in class tests. I would recommend this for anyone taking this class.
