3.0 out of 5 stars In This Book, and in Your Heart, You Knew That He Was Right!, April 10, 2008

This book is a campaign, or even a pre-campaign, biography of Barry Goldwater. Copy written in 1962, it tells the story of a Senator who worked his way up, molded the Republican party that would be successful in Arizona and was on the threshold of winning the presidential nomination. Written by a journalist and the campaign manager of Goldwater's 1958 reelection race, it is long on praise and short on criticism.

This book is full of anecdotes which could only be supplied by Goldwater or someone close to him. In reading this book I learned interesting details of Goldwater's life and his role in the history of Arizona. It touches on his business experience and his service as a pilot while flying "Over the Hump' during World War II. I had been unaware that it was Goldwater who was most responsible for the transformation of Arizona from a one party Democratic state to a two party, Republican leaning one. I learned of his role in electing the first Republican governor in many years and the respect which he gained in the Senate which lead to his selection as Chairman of the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee. The sections on the 1960 campaign and Convention make for fascinating reading.

I picked this book as "mood setting reading" for a trip to Arizona because it is small and travels easily. I would recommend that the reader not operating under such constraints find a more recent and comprehensive biography for a starter. This is a good one to give the reader an appreciation for what Barry Goldwater meant to those who knew, in their hearts, that he was right!
