5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite of John Barry's
What can I say, except that I absolutely adore this man's music and this particular recording consists of his most beautiful compositions and re-recorded specifically for this one recording. I have played this CD even more than my other John Barry recordings (which is quite a few). Anyone who adores and respects this brilliant composer as I do will love this CD! Mr...

1.0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment
I don't understand all the raves for this CD, I was so disappointed when I listened to it. I've always liked John Barry's film scores but in this re-recording all life has been drained out of the music. Where's all the emotion, the excitement and pathos? Instead, every track sounds the same -- they're all filled with a melancholic boredom. Give me any of the original...

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite of John Barry's, February 27, 2000
This review is from: John Barry Moviola (Film Score Re-recording Compilation) (Audio CD)
Mr. Barry even included 2 compositions never heard before, which are simply beautiful. I've been a fan of this man's for many, many years & I usually buy his soundtracks even if I've never even seen the film, as he's never disappointed me yet! To me, there is no other soundtrack composer like John Barry. For those not familiar with his work, this particular CD would be the one I'd recommend for your first purchase -- you'll be hooked and want to purchase every soundtrack the man has done. Thank you, John Barry!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'LL TAKE THE JOHN BARRY SAMPLE PLATE, PLEASE, September 5, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: John Barry Moviola (Film Score Re-recording Compilation) (Audio CD)
Some of John Barry's best movie themes on one album! But you'll find that these tracks are not simply copies of what appears on his soundtrack albums. The best example is the theme from The Midnight Cowboy. A timeless harmonica solo accompanied by classic orchestra characterized this legendary track on the soundtrack album. It is still one of my very favorite John Barry compositions ever. But compare that to what you get on Moviola. The Midnight Cowboy is rendered hauntingly and beautifully in full orchestra with the harmonica echoing the original movie soundtrack version. Absolutely splendid.

Tracks from Out of Africa, Dances With Wolves and Born Free, as well as other Barry favorites will make this album a must for any serious John Barry collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Master of the Delicate Soundtrack, February 23, 2002
This review is from: John Barry Moviola (Film Score Re-recording Compilation) (Audio CD)
While movie music greats John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, and legendary Bernard Herrmann sometimes "pulled out all the stops" in their respective compositions, Barry, known for his contributions to many of the Bond films, used subtlety to convey the on-screen actions of the movie that his music accompanied. This makes his music so emotional and reflective.

One of the highlights is the highly sensual theme from "Body Heat." This has to be one of the most erotic arrangements of black dots ever written on paper.

HOT!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD captures John Barry's soul-stirring style., October 6, 1999

This review is from: John Barry Moviola (Film Score Re-recording Compilation) (Audio CD)
Without a doubt, John Barry is my favorite contemporary composer. The melodies of his music speak to my heart and soul while the rhythms simply move me. This CD captures John Barry's soul-stirring style. Somehow, the music on this CD reflects the rising and ebbing tides of life. Certain aspects of the CD evoke tears of sadness while others cause tears of joy. Through this music, one actually feels that "weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning." Moviola is a collection of passionate songs that illustrate feelings of strength, vulnerability, happiness, light-heartedness, fun, and empowerment. Not only does this music speak to the emotions, it speaks to the intellect. It is perfect background music for periods of deep, comtemplative thinking. While this CD is not for everyone, it is for those of us who enjoy the intricacies of instrumental music. I first purchased Moviola on cassette tape and now I have purchased the CD version twice. It is absolutely wonderful and the perfect centerpiece of any CD collection.

I have this album. I noticed that you are showing 1 star for it (based on 1 review). I felt compelled to act. John Barry is a world treasure. A brilliant and sensitive composer/arranger/film-scorer/conductor. The quality of his work is consistently high, and this collection is a marvelous offering of some of the best of his original themes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Movie Score Composer, July 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: John Barry Moviola (Film Score Re-recording Compilation) (Audio CD)
Every track on this cd is excellent. I have even recognized some songs that I've loved for years but never knew who the composer was. I have to have this compilation either in my car or home at all times. I believe most of the movies John Barry composes for do well in part because of his music. "Dances With Wolves" and "Somewhere in Time", for example, would not be the same without Mr. Barry's signature style. My favorite, though, would have to be the theme from "Chaplin".

5.0 out of 5 stars The best, December 20, 2002

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: John Barry Moviola (Film Score Re-recording Compilation) (Audio CD)
This is the best Barry release in recent years. Not only do you get the luxury of hearing the original composer rework his most treasured themes, there is the great boon of the performance by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

For those of us who wanted to hear some of the themes in Barry's later, highly orchestral style, there is a grander 'Out of Africa', a still more sultry and Barryesque 'Body Heat', and a more heart-tugging 'Somewhere in Time' and 'We Have All the Time in the World'.

Most tellingly, it exposes how many modern composers do not understand how to weave a lyrical, melodic style into film scores nowadays. Barry does it, each theme bringing back images of what appeared on celluloid and the exact mood that the original film tried to capture. The visual images conjured up by these themes are clear and undeniable.

I don't believe one needs to be a Barry fan to appreciate this album. Anyone with a love of music and the subtleties of film scoring will delight in this compilation. From one of the true greats of modern music composition.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Very Best of John Barry, January 2, 2000
By
This review is from: John Barry Moviola (Film Score Re-recording Compilation) (Audio CD)
I borrowed this CD from my son then HAD to buy it. This CD showcases John Barry's distinctive majestic style with fluidity and grace. He has compiled all his best works with a flare and passion I've not heard before in the soundtracks of the movies.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love this man's music and this CD is just beautiful., January 15, 1999

This review is from: John Barry Moviola (Film Score Re-recording Compilation) (Audio CD)
Once I started listening to John Barry's movie soundtracks I found his style really distinctive & I could, without fail, recognize him as the composer before the credits rolled. Some of his music is haunting, such as Mary,Queen of Scots - I listen to it once and hum it for days. My only regret is some of his melodies cannot be found as sheet music - what IS available is as lovely to play as it is to hear. I love this particular CD and plan to buy more of his CD's.
