This review is from: The Barrytown Trilogy - the commitments/The snapper/The Van (Paperback)
While in Portugal for a month last February ran out of English reading materials - YIKES! While combing the flea markets finally found an English book that looked both interesting and affordable. Had seen the film "The Commitments" years before, but getting into the dialect of the reading and the trilogy itself was a real treat. Human, gritty, poignant and full of humor. These are stories of the heart, a window into that part of the world and interactions that are universal with a real Irish flavor. My friend also ran out of reading (most everything in Portugese or expensive for travelers on the cheap)...and because I was laughing so hard in the next bed she finally talked me into ripping apart my book as I was reading it so she could also have something wonderful. It was hard to tear up a book...but hey, it tells you how good it was. We recycled our pages at the end...and I have since bought another one to give to my neighbors for Christmas.
